Masami Horikoshi (Ku Yue Zheng Si , Horikoshi Masami) , (born 27 November 1968 in Kumagaya) is a former Japanese rugby union player and coach. He was a scrum half. He is currently the head coach for Rissho University’s Rugby Club.

In the year 2015, Horikoshi was appointed as Saitama Rugby Ambassador and was responsible for Kumagaya public relations during the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

After the formation of the rugby sevens team Arukas Kumagaya Horikoshi was appointed as coach and general manager for the team. The team was created by Horikoshi and others, who wanted to develop and strengthen female players in rugby coach, recruit coaches, bring the sport throughout the region, and eventually achieve medals at the Olympic Games.

After his departure from 1998 Horikoshi took over as the coach at Rissho University Rugby Club. In 2004 Rissho was victorious against Takushoku University RFC and led Rissho to promotion to one division in the Kanto University Rugby League However, Rissho was relegated to the second division in 2007. Under Horikoshi’s direction, Rissho won against Kanto Gakuin University RFC and was able to achieve again move to the top division however, it was then relegated to the second division in the year 2014.

Through his high school years, Horikoshi was aiming to play baseball and become a professional player in baseball however, he decided to drop the sport due to his diminutive height. The school he graduated from was Kumagaya Industrial High School which was a prefectural high school, following the advice of senior. In his scrum-half role in one season when he was among the top four in an all-school national rugby tournament. The following season, Horikoshi got selected to the Saitama prefectural selection . He also won his first prize in the National Sports Festival, among the top four in the National High School Competition. After the following three years, Horikoshi was picked to the Japan national high school team. He also took part in an New Zealand tour, placing second in the National High School competition. After 1987, Horikoshi was accepted into Waseda University and began to play for the Rugby Football Club. He played frequently as a participant in a game against an Irish student representative team on the 20th of September in the same year. He winning 2 high school titles in the years 1987 and 1989, and took home his first Japanese title in 1987. In the days of high school his nickname was the nickname Mole (mogu , Mogu) due to his swift and mysterious movementsthat resembled those of Ninjas, his dazzling passes , and his ability to get through an opponent’s defense. The team was dubbed”the return” of Hiroaki Shukuzawa who was his senior. Horikoshi was captain towards the end of the fourth season and performed well with Meiji University RFC, led by Yoshihito Yoshida. In 1991, following his graduation at Waseda University, Horikoshi joined Kobe Steel and played for the team. Though he considered being employed by the life insurance company which offered him a job to the United Kingdom, he chose to join Kobe Steel, from the reality that many Japanese internationals had worked there as well, including Seiji Hirao. In the case of Kobe Steel, Horikoshi contributed to Kobe Steel’s seventh consecutive win at the Japanese championship following the fourth consecutive title in which Horikoshi was captain. Following that, his final game with Kobe Steel was on 28 February 1999, when they played Toshiba Fuchu. He was first called up to Japan’s national team in 1988. Japan National team on the 28th of January, 1988 during the second year of his university with an average of 26 caps. His first cap came in a match against Oxford University, in Tokyo on the 1st of October, 1988. After battling for the scrum-half position together with Toshiba Fuchu’s Wataru Murata Horikoshi played in both the 1991 and 1995 Rugby World Cups. In the following years, even after having left Kobe Steel, Horikoshi continued to work as a the head of Rissho University, while being selected to his Japan nation’s team which is coached by Hirao. As he hoped to participate in the 1999 Rugby World Cup, former All Black Graeme Bachop was recently named a player, and was announced in August 1st of the year, which meant removing Horikoshi from the squad. The year 2000 saw Horikoshi quit as an athlete participating in a match game of a testimonial in the match between Waseda as well as Meiji universities. He was a part of his fellow Waseda players.
