She was a figure skater and took part in her first competition when she was just 6 years old. She started gymnastics at the advice of her skating choreographer who believed that she was capable of excelling for the game. She was trained in the Spartak club in Kiev and her coaches were Valentina Panchenko Valery Tupitsy, and Galina Perskaya.
The year 1985 was the time Omelianchik took home the Soviet National Championships and beat the potential Olympic winner Elena Shushunova. She also competed in the European Championships for the first time and won the title of balance beam, which included an unidirectional dismount. She also took home bronze in the all-around, behind Shushunova along with East German Maxi Gnauck, silver in the floor exercises and bronze on uneven bars.
Despite maintaining consistent results within the top the 7 in the USSR Cup and USSR Championships for years, she was not selected for the 1988 Olympics. She was named as an alternate to the team and traveled with them to Seoul, but was not called upon to compete. Her final competition was the 1989 USSR Cup, where she placed 2nd in the all-around.
Omelianchik was part of the first-place Soviet team in 1985 World Gymnastics Championships in Montreal however, she was unable to perform well during the competition for teams and failed to get into an all-around championship. But, Soviet team officials decided to remove Olga Mostepanova and Irina Baraksanova who had been selected for finals. They also decided to to substitute Omelianchik along with co-teammate Shushunova. This decision was good; Omelianchik and Shushunova Soviet gymnasts won the all-around gold, and went on to become Worlds co-champions. In the finals of the event, Omelianchik won the floor gold medal through the “Birdie” exercise, which was to become her most popular routine.

Oksana Omelianchik (Ukrainian: Oksana Oleksandrivna Omel’ianchik Alternate translations: Oksana Omiel’jantchik, Oksana Omeliantchik Oksana Omelyanchyk born 2 January 1970) is a former Soviet gymnast, and the all-around gold medalist from the 1985 World Championships. Omelianchik was famous for her spirited displaymanship, her difficulty and her originality and her pioneering back-to-back tumbles.
In the year 1983 Omelianchik had been competing in international competitions for the USSR. In the Junior Friendship Tournament (Druzhba) which was a major event for gymnasts in junior age Omelianchik was awarded gold medals for the floor as well as uneven bars. She also placed third in an all-around contest. In her debut USSR Championships in 1983, she was fifth in the all-around competition. The following year, she participated at both the senior and junior USSR Championships, winning the all-around gold medal at the first, and finishing fourth at the final and was chosen as an alternate to the Soviet team in the 1984 Friendship Games (also known as “Olomouc” after the city where the games were held).
Omelianchik continued to compete for the Soviet team after the World Championships, placing third in the all-around at the 1986 Goodwill Games and third all around at the World Cup in Beijing. She also won the balance beam title and placed second on uneven bars and vault and third on floor exercise. The following year at the World Championships the Soviet team lost the title to a dominant team from Romania. Omelianchik debuted her new vault which introduced the half on technique in the roundoff family of vaults. She also showcased a new floor routine to Ballet Russe and a new triple full to a tuck front rebound, but suffered an uncharacteristic fall in the team competition. She placed fifth all around and failed to qualify for any event finals.
