John Ricky Riccitelli, the son Gail Luiz Riccitelli and John Riccitelli, was born in Durban on 3 February 1995. After his mother was offered a job in New Zealand, Riccitelli and both his parents immigrated to New Zealand as a four-year-old. He settled in Oakura and attended Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Plymouth. Riccitelli was a star in rugby union and cricket during secondary school. He was awarded the sportsman of year award by his school in 2012. He was a cricketer who played in Taranaki junior grades sides. This is his school’s first XI since 2009.

Riccitelli also played in the disappointing Hawke’s Bay team in 2016, which finished last. He made progress as a loosehead starter prop in their Mitre 10 Cup campaign. Riccitelli returned to his preferred and primary role of hooker during the Bay of Plenty match at Napier’s McLean Park. After he participated in all ten Hawke’s Bay matches, Riccitelli extended his club’s appearances up to 18 making it a personal best.

Riccitelli returned to his home province of Taranaki. Having already secured Jordie Barrett, Taranaki had lured Riccitelli for the 2017 and 2018 Mitre 10 Cup season’s, him to signing a two-year deal. With hooker Rhys Marshall taking up an offer to play for Munster in Ireland at the end of the previous season, coach Colin Cooper said Riccitelli had a chance to claim the vacant hooker position.

Riccitelli represents the Taranaki provincial team and made his professional debut for the union in 2017 at the age of 22. He spent a season at the Hawke’s Bay side, before earning a short-term contract in the Hurricanes 2016 Super Rugby squad. He has defended the Ranfurly Shield with Hawke’s Bay in 2014 and Taranaki in 2017, won a championship with the Hurricanes in 2016 and was named Player of the Year at the TRFU Amber and Black awards. He has scored 6 career tries in all competitions.

Riccitelli was also considered by other provincial unions. However, Riccitelli signed a two year deal with Hawke’s Bay in May 2015 under coach Craig Philpott. Philpott was impressed by his performance after seeing him at the New Zealand under-20 trial camp. In 2015, he made his provincial debut. He played in the pre-season Ranfurly Shield matches against Horowhenua–Kapiti (Mid Canterbury) and Mid Canterbury. He also made six appearances in the 2015 ITM Cup season.

He represented Taranaki at rugby’s under-14 and under-18 levels, and was selected for the Hurricanes under-16 tournament team in 2012. Riccitelli was a three-year student at Otago University. He played rugby for the Southern club in Dunedin, and captained the Otago Under-19s. Riccitelli left for the Under 20 World Championships in Italy in 2015. He also spent time with Jon Preston, former assistant coach of the Highlanders. Riccitelli also played for New Zealand’s U20’s at the Oceania Junior Championship earlier that year. Riccitelli was able to participate in seven of eight Baby Blacks games (including the historic win over England in U20 WC final). He started as a loosehead prop.

Riccitelli became a regular starter for the Hurricanes in the 2017 Super Rugby season after another injury to Hurricanes’ captain and first-choice All Blacks hooker Dane Coles. He was preferred over Leni Apisai for the role. Riccitelli was eventually called up as injury cover for the All Blacks’ 2017 Rugby Championship, with Coles out of the first round and Liam Coltman out for the season. Riccitelli did not play in the competition and was released back to Taranaki after Coles recovered from his second concussion of the 2017 season.
