Jones was born in his home on the South Side of Chicago, just a few blocks away from Ida B. Wells’s housing project. Ida B. Wells residential project. The family was home-grown by grandparents Gus as well as June Jones and lived in the same home the family lived in from the 1930s onwards. He was an ambassador for juniors of his organization, the No Dope Express Foundation, an education for youth and anti-drug group.

Jones completed his studies at the Chicago’s Dr. Martin Luther King High School in 1997. He was a criminologist in Florida State University where he joined Kappa Alpha Psi in the spring of 1998. He later transferred onto Barat College in Lake Forest, Illinois in 2001. He earned an B.A. from the Department of Interdisciplinary Research with a concentration in Social Science.

At the height of the Rod Blagojevich scandal, Jones made the decision to run for United States Senate. In 2009, he announced his candidacy in the 2010 election for the seat currently held by Roland Burris. Burris, who was appointed by Governor Blagojevich to fill the seat vacated by Barack Obama following Obama’s election as President of the United States, chose not to seek re-election.

Jones ran unopposed in the Green Party primary and gained the nomination. He ran against Republican Mark Kirk, Democrat Alexi Giannoulias, and Libertarian Mike Labno in the general election in November 2010.

Jones and Newman created a second film in 1994, The 14 Stories of Eric Morse, which explored the background of those associated with Eric Morse, a five- year-old boy who was fatally removed from a window on the 14th floor within The Chicago project by two boys of a different age. The documentary aired in NPR’s All Things Considered in 1996. The film won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award as well as the Peabody Award.

At the age of 13 Jones and his pal Lloyd Newman created a radio documentary for NPR called Ghetto Life 101. Jones was approached through David Isay, who was working on a piece on the issue of poverty on Chicago Public Radio station WBEZ. The documentary portrayed the life of the South Side of Chicago in 1993. The tapes made by the two centered around interviews with the families of the boys and friends as well as people from the community. The program was well- received and was appreciated for its honest account of life in the communities in Chicago. The broadcast was awarded numerous awards such as The Sigma Delta Chi Award, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Awards for Excellence in Documentary Radio and Special Achievement in Radio Programming.

The two documentaries and further footage from when Jones and Newman were nearing high school graduation were condensed into a book published in 1997 titled Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago.
