Bernardt made two starts in the 2014 Vodacom Cup competition for the Eastern Province Kings after the 2014 Varsity Cup. He also participated in their final match of campaign (for the first twenty minute of the match, he was injured), which saw them defeat the Sharks XV 27-11 at Durban. Bernardt, a high school student from Oakdale Agricultural High in Riversdale (West Cape), was selected to represent the local provincial side, SWD Eagles at the Under-16 Grant Khomo Week competition. He played again for the side two years later at the Under-18 Craven Week Competition in Kimberley. This time, he scored a try against the Falcons.
He made the move from Durban to the Sharks in 2012 to play for them. He was a Sharks U19 player in the 2012 Under-19 Provincial Championship. He scored one try against the former side SWD U19. He was promoted to the Sharks Under-21 side in 2013. He made five appearances at the 2013 Under-21 Provincial Championship but only one of them started – the 13-36 semi-final defeat to the Blue Bulls Under 21.
