Currentzis was named the chief guest conductor of the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra in the year 2011. In April 2017 The SWR made an announcement about the appointment to Currentzis as the inaugural director of conductors for the SWR Symphonieorchester (the successor orchestra of the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra) starting from the 2018-2019 season.
Beyond music in 2009 Currentzis was a character on screen in Ilya Khrzhanovsky’s movie Dau (Russian: Dau ) inspired by the life of scientist Lev Landau.

Currentzis was born in Athens In Athens, and at age four, he began taking piano lessons. At the age of 7, he began his violin lessons. He was admitted to at the National Conservatory, Athens at 12 years old in the department of violin. At the age of 15, in 1987 He began his studies in composition in the class of Prof. George Hadjinikos, and then in 1989, he studied under the direction of Professor B. Shreck. From 1994 until 1999, Currentzis conducted in the St. Petersburg State Conservatory alongside Ilya Musin.
From 2004 until the year 2010, Currentzis was director for The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre and Ballet Theatre, where he established MusicAeterna, the Orchestra MusicAeterna and later the Chorus MusicAeterna. Since February of 2011, Currentzis has been music director of the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre where he has joined both of his MusicAeterna groups.
