Elyasaf Kowner is one of the most popular and richest Painter who was born on July 13, 1970 in Haifa, Haifa District, Israel. Elyasaf Kowner (Hebrew Alysp Kvbnr ) (born in 1970) is an Israeli artist who works in interdisciplinary fields and explores the issues of loss, abuse control and the love of people. He has created more than 30 poetic short films which were screened at international festivals and museums. Kowner has been described as an “multidisciplinary who can convert anything to art, design, documentary or other creative gold.”

In 2003, after winning the prize ‘First Portrait’, Kowner was awarded a prize from the Israel National Lottery, which was followed by an exhibit at the Tel Aviv museum. He created an installation with an open-air living space with a television that played Violent Emotion. In Violent Emotion the film, is a mix of violence and passion between two individuals, one strong and one weak , in the course of a relationship. In Violent Emotion, the Macho male is shown horribly in this film. Violent Emotion was played in Michal Heiman’s work What Are You Thinking? (2004) and fooled viewers who, while being examined were convinced that the film was not real. None of the reactions documented was ever communicated to the artist in the manner promised to them.

Kowner’s camera documents segments of daily events, which undergo minimal editing, and some of these segments are presented almost as stills. Most scenes are based on interaction between individuals, which the camera singles out from the movement of the crowd and from tumultuous urban life. The filming, which tends to focus on various physical gestures, charges the human action with strains of despair and hope destined to be endlessly repeated. The segments are taken out of coherent context and the viewer is invited to infuse them with subjective meaning. These moments – blending softness with violence, daily routine with elements of surprise and even ecstasy – are captured by a curious and sometimes empathetic eye that yields to random phenomena and events, not from a critical standpoint but from attentiveness to the contemporary rhythm of life that pulses in the city and on its fringes.

From 2000 to 2003, Kowner walked in the city of Tel Aviv, talking to strangers and filming videos. In 2002, he released Car Portraits, a book which was accompanied by a video that documented strangers who were in the cars of their neighbors. Even though, invariably the camera creates an obstruction, was an ethereal and a pulsating connection between Kowner and the people who he had met in the shadows of the crossbars on their cars.

Kowner first gained media attention when he spent two years at New York (1993-1995), where he spray-painted a variety of graffiti art. Some of them were the highly acclaimed graffiti advertisements featuring high heel shoes that he sprayed and he also added sentences like ‘Desire Has No Limits’ and ‘PureTimeless Seduction’. He claimed that he was a fashion stylist who was from Paris by writing his graffiti work ‘Elyasaf Kowner, Paris’.

He later continued to study at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Through a photography class in 1997, as part of the student exchange program in the Dutch Royal Academy of Art and Design, he created this collection Moments in Growth. The book has 100 double spreads that are black-and-white images paired with text. Kowner later stated that “it has been a result of a mystical connection” and recounted a journey which lasted just one day. The year 1999 saw his piece was titled After my Death (1999) was a look at an imagined death. It included video monologues of people who were able to explore memories that relate to life- affirming situations. The installation was awarded an award called the Sandberg award.

In 2004 Kowner participated in the World Wide Video Festival, Amsterdam, releasing Aftershock, a short film documenting a scene right after a suicide bomb attack in Tel aviv that occurred in Mike’s Place in April 2003. They were three men who came out without a scratch. They were still in shock during those hours while the memories keep flashing back.
