A fervent supporter of the family Nehru-Gandhi. He was the first to lead the way and played a key role in the victory of Sonia Gandhi from Bellary Lok Sabha Constituency in 1999.

Founder and Managing Trustee of Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Trust at Bellary. Over the years has been instrumental in conducting various programmes aimed at rural education, healthcare and social awareness in Bellary District. The Trust conducts regular Blood Camps, student’s education awareness programs, student career counselling, Health Camps and various other social activities Most recently the Trust mobilised financial and other resources and effectively deployed it in the flood affected areas in Bellary District.

In 1998, he was elected in his seat in the 12th Lok Sabha from the same district. The 12th Lok Sabha (1998-99) the member was of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence and the House Committee, Lok Sabha as well as in the Z.R.U.C.C, Central and Southern Railway as well as The Committee on Energy. He was elected in 1999 to was the Convener of the Congress Party in Parliament (Karnataka State);

The Mr. Kondaiah started out as farmer following his education. He was an adept learner and played a key role in turning the family’s business into an income making venture. In 1980, he along with a group of buddies founded a steel firm, called Bellary Steels and Alloys Limited. The company was started with a steel rolling mill, the Steel Melt Shop was commissioned in 1987 with a capacity of 18,000 TPA. The capacity was increased to 50,000 TPA in 1988. In 1995 the Electric Arc Furnace was replaced with an ultra-high power Eccentric Bottom Tapping (EBT) furnace. It was the Direct Reduced Iron Plant was in operation from 1992-93. It was the very first one of it’s type that was built in South India. Inspiring by its success, BSAL launched a brand new project – a contemporary Integrated Steel Plant with a capacity of 500000 TPA with a layout facility to increase it up to two MTPA.

In 1996, he was elected his seat in the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996 from the Bellary constituency in the year 1996. For the 11th Lok Sabha (1996-97) the member was on the Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests, and a Member (Special Invitee) of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Human Resource Development, as well as a member of Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Steel and Mines. Additionally, he was a part of both the Coffee Board and the Z.R.U.C.C., Central and Southern Railway.

He was member of Rajya Sabha from Karnataka from January 2000 to April 2002. In June 2001 he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council and in June 2004 he was re-elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council.
