Esterhuizen did not follow the traditional route of playing representative rugby at schoolboy, but he did join the Border U19 team in 2013 for their Provincial Championship campaign. He moved to the Port Elizabeth-based Eastern Province Kings in 2014, but he didn’t make any appearances. He played in six of the Eastern Province U21s’ matches during the regular season of the 2014 Under-21 Provincial Championship. This helped them to finish at the top of the log and qualify for the semi-finals. He played in their semi-final against Limpopo Blue Bulls Under-21, scoring a try during the first quarter to help them win 28-26. He also played the final against SWDU21 in Welkom. They won the match by 46-3. He was in the starting line-up for the promotion play-off against Border U21. A 64-9 win ensured that Eastern Province would be back in Group A in 2015.
Esterhuizen was still part of the team in 2015, having played in five of six matches. It was a disappointing season for Esterhuizen’s side, who struggled to adjust to the new level. They won just one match and finished bottom of the log.
