Giannis Petrakis is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on May 20, 1959 in Rethymno, Crete, Greece. Giannis Petrakis (Greek: Giannes Petrakes ; born on 20 May 1959) is a Greek former professional football player. He last played for PAS Giannina.

14 days following, on the 28th of January 2014 Petrakis has been hired by the Epirus-based Superleague team PAS Giannina. Petrakis did not fall into relegation until the conclusion of the season. He later secured an 8th place finish in both 2014-15 and 2015-16seasons, taking PAS Giannina to their first ever UEFA Europa League campaign. The club was rewarded for this feat when Petrakis has been recognized as the “Best Manager in Greece” for the 2014-2015 campaign. In addition to making a difference in the club’s history, Petrakis managed to advance PAS Giannina to the Third qualifying round of the competition after removing Norwegian team Odd 4-3. aggregate.He was a candidate to be “Best Manager in Greece” in the 2015-2016 campaign, however He didn’t vote again.His contract wasn’t renewed due to PAS Giannina relegated from Super League.

In the year 2004, Petrakis left Crete for the first time in his professional career, becoming the manager of Club Arcadian Asteras Tripoli, which he promoted to the Gamma Ethniki. He later came back to Rethymno and took the local team Asteras Rethymno towards be promoted to the Gamma Ethniki as well. Petrakis continued to coach Nea Ionia (2009-2010), Ionikos (2010-2011) and Chania (2011-2012) prior to returning and being appointed as head coach of OFI 7 January 2013, when Petrakis made his first appearance as an official Superleague manager. Petrakis managed the team in 15 games, and managed to stay out of the relegation zone, and was let go by his club towards the conclusion of the season, based on mutual agreement.

Petrakis started his career in football at his home club Asteras Perama, and then moved towards Heraklion as well as Ergotelis after 1978. In 1981, Petrakis made the move to his local rival OFI which was playing in OFI’s Alpha Ethniki, the top soccer league in Greece before returning to Gamma Ethniki side Ergotelis in 1985, when he made it to in the 85-86 Greek Cup quarterfinals. In 1988 the year he returned to his home town of Rethymno in order to join EAR Rethymnou, before ending his playing career at Heraklion- based Poseidon and with whom he was the sole winner of that of the 1991-91 The Delta Ethniki championship.

Petrakis started his career as a coach in the year 1991 with Asteras Perama. He was appointed coach of Ergotelis in 1992 before going back in 1994 to Asteras Perama the following year. Then, in 1997 Petrakis became the manager of Heraklion’s club Irodotos who he promoted to Gamma Ethniki, the third stage in the Greek football league system. He was then appointed manager for Malia the local team PANO Malia, whom he promoted to the Delta Ethniki (the fourth tier of the Greek football league system) for the first time in their history. The club was able to win the Greek Football Amateur Cup in 2000. Then, he managed to boost the amateur division from OFI Crete, OFI 94 to the Delta Ethniki, and was manager between 2000 and 2002 at which point the club appointed as the assistant to the head coach of OFI Zdenek Scasny. After 2003, Petrakis came back to Irodotos and managed to bring his club’s status to Gamma Ethniki once again.

In the summer of 2013, Petrakis was hired as head coach of the other local Superleague side Ergotelis. The season took off with an impressive start, in which the club remained undefeated for 8 consecutive matches (the best undefeated record in the club’s history in the league). At the end of October however, Ergotelis began struggling, and as a result, the club’s board of directors decided to replace Petrakis on 14 January 2014.
