Thomas Michael Cousineau (born May 6 1957) is an American professional and college footballer who played defensive linebacker for the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons throughout the 1970s and the 1980s. He played for the college team of Ohio State University, and twice received All-American distinctions. He was the top pick in the 1979 NFL Draft, and played professionally for the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes and the NFL’s Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers.
Cousineau was also a skilled wrestler. In 1975 with legendary coach Howard Ferguson, he lost to the future NFL players Bob Golic from cross-town all-boys school Rival St. Joseph High School in the Ohio finals of the state tournament in the weight class of heavyweight. The contest has been described as “one of the most memorable,” Golic went to take home the state championship, and Cousineau was third in third place. Golic went on to become a the two-time All-American in heavyweight boxing at Notre Dame. Cousineau and Golic were partners in the NFL together with the Browns.
Cousineau’s last game for the Buckeyes was the infamous 1978 Gator Bowl against Clemson, during which Coach Hayes punched Clemson linebacker Charlie Bauman in the final minutes of the game. Hayes was fired the following day for the incident.
