He relocated to Potchefstroom during this year’s Vodacom Cup campaign to join the Leopards. He played in the team in six out of seven matches in the tournament and scored tries in their games with the Limpopo Blue Bulls and the Griffons.
He made the move in 2013 to East London, joining the Border Bulldogs for the 2013 Currie Cup First Division competition. He began playing in first-team action right after, and made his first appearance in the first game for the year, which was a 1236 home defeat in the SWD Eagles. He was a starter on eight Bulldogs games during the tournament, scoring one goal with the Falcons in the fourth game of his debut.

Mhlongo was a part of the Sharks Academy, but failed to be a part of the team in any way. Instead, he relocated to Pretoria in 2011 in which he played for Pretoria’s UP Tuks side that participated in and made it to the finals of 2011’s Varsity Cup competition. The amount of time he played was not as great with only three appearances as a substitute. He played again for the team during their 2012 Varsity Cup tournament, which resulted in UP Tuks win the title for the first time. Mhlongo also got more game playing time during the 2012 season, playing in every match beginning in the second round. He scored a try (in the final match of their regular season with the UCT Ikey Tigers) and was also in the final 20 seconds of the game in which the Pretoria side won 29-21 against the Maties team that had previously was the winner of the first three seasons of the tournament.
Mhlongo was among the players let go from the Border Bulldogs at the end of 2013, as their financial problems grew worse and they were declared bankrupt.
He was a member of the Leopards team that won the 2015 Currie Cup First Division. He featured in a total of ten matches during the 2015 Currie Cup qualification rounds and First Division proper. However, he didn’t feature in the final, where the Leopards beat the SWD Eagles 44–20 to win the competition for the first time in their history.
