De Luca had represented Scotland at all levels of the age-grade system, as well as the ‘A’ level. He was then called up to the Scotland squad in the 2008 Six Nations Championship. In the opening game of the 2008 Six Nations Championship, he made his debut for Scotland against France. De Luca remained in his same position against Wales. It was a hard introduction to international rugby for him as he struggled through the 2008 RBS 6 Nations, being part of an ineffective and under-used Scottish backline. He has since done well to get over this.
De Luca started for Scotland in the 2011 Rugby World Cup games against Georgia and Argentina. He displaced Joe Ansbro who had started in the first game for Scotland against Romania. In the next game, a decider against England, De Luca joined the game as a second-half substitute for the injured Max Evans.
His first international try was on 19 March 2011 in the 2011 Six Nations Championship match against Italy at Murrayfield, the first Scotland try at the stadium since November 2009.
Dumfries-born De Luca praised the bravery of Queen of the South, his local football team that won the 2008 Scottish Cup Final against all odds. The team beat Aberdeen 4-3 in the semi-finals. De Luca stated that, “Even though I don’t like football, it was really satisfying to see Queen of the South reach the Scottish Cup final: that kind of result is what sports is all about.”

De Luca started as an apprentice at Edinburgh in 2005, before joining Border Reivers during the 2006-07 season. After the dissolution of the region in 2007, he returned home to Edinburgh. De Luca’s debut season was marked with a memorable try against Toulouse at the Heineken Cup, where he helped Yannick Jauzion to land. Later that year, he contributed a remarkable effort at Ospreys.
