After a disappointing World Championship result in 2011, Hawes began training with Bobby Folan (an assistant coach of Texas Longhorn Men’s Varsity Swimming Team), at the University of Sydney. He was there working with Matt Jaukovich (previous 50m butterfly world record holder) on technical aspects of his main event, the 200m backstroke. Bobby Folan, his coach, was trained by Eddie Reese in Texas. They both coached Aaron Peirsol and Garreth Weber–Gale to the 2008 Olympic Games.

Hawes held the 200m Backstroke Canadian record for just over ten years until it was broken in 2019 by Markus Thormeyer at the 2019 World Aquatic Championships.

Hawes broke the national record for the 200-meter backstroke at the 2009 World Aquatic Trials, Montreal (1:57.34). This earned him a place on the World Championship team. He finished 18th at the World Championships, and then broke the longest-standing men’s National record (SC) in Leeds, England, in the 200-metre backstroke (SC).
