Blundell was awarded the Yrjo Jansson Award in 1995 by the European Economic Association. This award is given every two years to the most outstanding young economist in Europe. It recognizes his contributions in microeconometrics, analysis of labor supply, welfare reform, and consumer behavior. He was awarded the Econometric Society’s Frisch Medal in 2000 for his empirical and theoretical applied research published within Econometrica over the preceding five years. He was awarded the Jean-Jacques Laffont prize 2008 by the Toulouse School of Economics in 2008 to an international high-level economist whose work combines the applied and theoretical aspects of economics. He was awarded the 2010 Distinguished Center for Economic Studies Fellowship by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich to an exceptional economist who has made a significant contribution to understanding economic policy issues. He was awarded the IZA Prize in Labor Economics in 2012 by IZA for his outstanding academic achievements in the area of labor economics.

Blundell has received honorary doctorates from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland in 2003; the University of Mannheim in 2011; the Norwegian School of Economics NHH, Bergen in 2011; the Università della Svizzera italiana, Switzerland in 2016; the University of Bristol in 2017 and the University of Venice Ca Foscari in 2018. He was knighted in the 2014 New Year Honours for services to economics and social science.

In 2004 Blundell became President of the European Economic Association, in 2006, President of the Econometric Society in 2010, President of The Society of Labor Economics and served as President of the Royal Economic Society (2010-2012).

Blundell is the David Ricardo professor of political economy at the Department of Economics at University College London. He also serves as the Director of the ESRC Centre for the Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy (Institute for Fiscal Studies). Between 1986 and 2016, he was the Institute for Fiscal Studies’ Research Director. He is a Fellow of The Econometric Society (1991), Fellow of British Academy (1996) and Honorary Member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences ((2002).

Blundell earned his B.Sc. Blundell received his B.Sc. in economics with Statistics from University of Bristol in 1973. He then graduated from the London School of Economics with a master’s in econometrics, and mathematical economics in 1975.

From 1975 to 1984, he was a Lecturer in Econometrics for the University of Manchester. In 1984, he was made Professor of Economics at University College London.
