Nat Saumi is one of the most popular and richest Rugby Union Player who was born on September 3, 1970 in Nadroga-Navosa, Western, Fiji. Nat Saumi (born in 1970), also known as Nacenieli is a former Fijian rugby union player and is currently a coach. Nat is a versatile back who can play as a fly-half, centre, or full back. Despite being offered a place in the Premiership, Nat played for South-West clubs throughout his career, including Penzance & Newlyn, now known as Cornish Pirates, and Plymouth. He also coached. Nat was a prolific point scorer in both kicking and tries. He set a Divisional Record of 374 points in one season while playing for Penzance Newlyn in 2001. Nat was also a member of the Fiji Sevens, Barbarians, and Cornwall teams that won the Bill Beaumont Cup in 1999.
Nat returned to kicking in 2005-06, scoring 106 points as Plymouth placed 5th in a highly competitive division that included strong teams like Harlequins Bedford Blues, Harlequins and the Cornish Pirates. Nat was honored to be called up by Barbarians in April 2006 for their game against Royal Navy. The game was held at Albion’s Brickfields. Nat began to mix coaching and playing as he approached his last two seasons with Albion.
After leaving Penzance & Newlyn in 2003, Nat was signed at Plymouth Albion by Graham Dawe. They were, like his former club, in National Division One. They were an ambitious south-west team that had climbed the grades. Albion finished third in the league his first year, a far cry from league champions Worcester Warriors, who won all of their games. Albion made him 20 times in all competitions. However, he didn’t enjoy the prolific scoring that he enjoyed while playing with Penzance & Newlyn. His teammate Tom Barlow was the primary kicker. Nat had another successful season in 2004-05, when he was a regular player in a team that finished third in the league, 11 behind champions, Bristol Shoguns. He also participated in the finals of the Powergen Shield, which was the first time Plymouth had ever been to Twickenham Stadium. His side lost 13-14 against the winners Bedford Blues.

After representing Fiji in international sevens, Nat made the move to England in 1996 to play for Redruth. At that time, he was competing in tier 3 English rugby union. After a few seasons at Redruth where he was relegated, he moved to England to play for Penzance & Newlyn, now known as the Cornish Pirates. He won South West Division 1 his first season, and was promoted to tier 4. He also won the Cornwall Cup. Redruth was Cornwall’s most prestigious club. However, the club was on the decline. Penzance & Newlyn, the highest ranked Cornish club of the English league system, finished 2nd and just missed out on a second consecutive promotion. (Redruth came in 5th). His form with his club team, which included winning a second Cornwall Cup, would see Nat called up to Cornwall for the County Championships 1999. Nat was a key player in the final at Twickenham Stadium. He took over kicking duties during the last stages of the game, and scored a number points against Gloucestershire in a victory of 24-15. This would be Cornwall’s first win in the competition since 1991.
Penzance & Newlyn were unable to be promoted in the 2000-01 season. They finished 3rd outside the promotion play-off slot, which was occupied Launceston, a Cornish side. Despite his disappointment at not being promoted, Nat had an exceptional scoring season, with 352 points in just 23 games. This included 17 tries. He was the division’s highest scorer. His next season was undoubtedly the best in Nat’s league career. He scored a divisional record breaking 374 point from 24 games as Penzance & Newlyn took home the National Division Three South title. This resulted in Penzance & Newlyn finishing 1 point ahead of their rivals Launceston, who had lost their promotion game last season. His club team would achieve the highest league level ever with promotion to National Division Two and National Division Three South wins. Penzance & Newlyn, a newly promoted side, won 22 of 26 games to become league champions. They also achieved their third promotion in five years to tier 2, which is one below the Premiership. Although they scored a respectable 234 from 22 games (the fourth-highest in the division), Nat was not able to witness this promotion. A training ground incident in which a teammate’s jaw was broken saw him fired by his club in March 2003.
After a brief spell in Fiji, Nat returned to Plymouth Albion as a player- coach, continuing to work with mentor Graham Dawe. Albion had been on the wane for a number of seasons and by November 2011 the club had sacked Graham Dawe. Dawe’s replacement, Pete Drewsett, then left in January 2012 due to the club’s financial problems, and Nat was offered the position of head coach. In his first season in charge, Nat ensured that Plymouth did just enough to avoid relegation by finishing second in the relegation group, with Esher going down instead. Targeting a top 8 position for the 2012–13 season, Nat just missed out on his promise as his side finished 9th, well clear of the single relegation place. Despite steering Albion to safety, Nat would leave the club at the end of the season to return home to Fiji. It was the end of an incredible English adventure for Nat who had played and coached in the south- west of England for 17 years. He currently lives in Fiji where he is a rugby coach and consultant.
