Michael Jamie Clegg, born 3 July 1977, is an English football coach. He was a former player and defender. He is the current first-team strength coach and power coach at Manchester United. His professional playing career began in the mid-1990s. Between 1996 and 2001, he made 24 appearances and was on loan to Wigan Athletic and Ipswich Town before moving permanently to Oldham Athletic in 2002. After making 52 appearances for the Latics in his first two seasons, he was forced to retire at 26 due to mental health issues.

Roy Keane, a former Manchester United team-mate, appointed Clegg as Sunderland’s strength & conditioning coach in 2006 after two years of being out of the game.

Clegg was on loan at Wigan Athletic and Ipswich Town before joining Oldham Athletic, a Second Division club on a free transfer of 19 February 2002. Clegg played only 10 games as Oldham qualified to the Second Division playoffs. They lost in the semi-finals. The club was not able to purchase it and the club went into administration. This resulted in the club being unable to pay their debts. Clegg played 32 games for the club, finishing in 15th. However, he was struggling with his mental health. He retired from professional football at end of 2003-04 season.

Clegg was born in Ashton-under-Lyne. He began his football career with Manchester United as a trainee and was part the 1995 FA Youth Cup-winning team. Clegg became a professional shortly after, making his debut in the Premier League against Middlesbrough on 23/11/96. In the 1996-97 season, he played in four FA Premier League matches. Although United were the champions for the fourth and fifth consecutive seasons, it wasn’t enough to earn a title winner’s medal. After United’s second trophyless decade in 1997-98, he made three more appearances. Clegg was not able to make the required number of appearances in 1999-2000, when United won their sixth title.
