As an eight-year old, he played with Wigston before joining Syston RFC. He was also a Ratcliffe College student and represented both the Midlands County and the England 16 Group Schools sides. In 1997-98, he joined the Leicester Tigers Academy and made his way through the Tigers Youth and U21 teams.
In 2000, Deacon joined Leicester Tigers. As a replacement for Cardiff in August 2000, Deacon made his team debut and quickly established himself as a reliable player who is equally at home at either the front or the middle of the line out. He has been club captain in the 2009-10 season, when Geordan Murphy was injured.
Having lived in the shadow of the England pairing of Martin Johnson and Ben Kay for several seasons, he took the opportunity in 2003–04 to command a regular place during the World Cup. He made 23 appearances in all that season, and by the end he was being picked ahead of Kay.
