Derek John Plante (born January 17th 1971) is a American hockey coach and an ex- professional hockey player. Plante played for eight years in the National Hockey League (NHL) with The Buffalo Sabres, Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers. He was a part of 1999’s Stanley Cup champion Dallas Stars. As an assistant coach, he worked at Minnesota University-Duluth during 2010 until 2015.
In the middle of the 1999 season, Plante was transferred for the Dallas Stars. The Stars reached towards their Stanley Cup finals and met Plante’s former team, the Sabres. Plante had been a part of the first two rounds of the playoffsand scored an important score in the 2nd round however, he was a healthy scratch each of the finals, in which the Stars defeated 4-2. Although he did not play at the end of the series, Plante got in on the custom of having personal stewardship of the Cup and spending the entire time in his hometown located in Cloquet, Minnesota. In the end, Dallas Stars had Plante’s name placed upon the Stanley Cup even though he didn’t play in the required amount of games.
Plante later went on to play in European leagues, most notably with the Munich Barons. From 2005 to 2007, he played in the Asian Hockey League as a member of the Nippon Paper Cranes, winning the championship in 2007. During 2007–2008, he played for the SC Langenthal.
He was hired on June 9, 2010 as a Minnesota Duluth assistant men’s hockey coach. In June 2015, he announced he was resigning from his assistant coaching position with UMD. In 2004, he gave birth to a girl, Emil, who was later diagnosed with severe Downs Syndrome.
Plante’s numbers fell in 1997-98. He scored only 33 points and 13 goals but the Sabres were further into playoffs that most anticipated, and ultimately lost in the finals to Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference Finals.

In high school, he was drafted with the Buffalo Sabres in 1989, Plante was a student at his first University of Minnesota Duluth and in his senior year, he was an All-Star, leading the WCHA in assists, goals and scoring. Plante was not a part of minor league hockey and made the leap straight into playing in NHL in 1994 to replace injury-stricken Pat LaFontaine and scoring 21 goals. In his quick transition to professional, Plante missed out on an chance to play for America in United States in the 1994 Winter Olympics.
In the lockout-shortened 1994-95 campaign, Plante managed only 3 goals and 19 assists but he was able to rebound nicely in 1995-96 with a resurgent and tough Sabres team, scoring 23 goals, and providing 30 assists. in 1997, Plante was the Sabres top scorer at center. Plante scored a record-breaking 27 goals and guided the surprisingly strong Sabres team to an Northeast Division championship and playoff place. Plante scored the game-winning Game 7 penalty goal in overtime against frenzied Ottawa Senators. Plante hit an opponent’s passing in the middle, then quickly moved himself and shot a slapshot which managed to slip through the netminder’s glove Ron Tugnutt and trickle into the goal. In 2000–01 Plante starred for the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms, and by the end of the year was called up to join the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers kept Derek on their playoff roster to face the Sabres. Plante scored a goal against his former teammate Dominik Hašek earlier in the season, but the Sabres prevailed, and Plante hasn’t been back in the NHL since.
