In 1999, he made his provincial debut playing for Wellington in the National Provincial Championship. He joined Taranaki the next year and was the top try scorer in the province that season. He returned to Wellington the following year. He played in 2002 for the Hurricanes at the Super 12 international competition. He joined the Chiefs two years later, before returning to the Hurricanes.
In 2002, he made his Manu Samoa debut. Fa’atau was a winger in Samoa’s 2003 World Cup match in Australia. Fa’atau only scored one try in that match. Fa’atau cites Manu Samoa as his greatest rugby memory.
