Kayode Soyinka is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on December 15, 1957 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Kayode Soyinka (born Olukayode Adedeji Soyinka 15th of December in 1957) is a Nigerian journalist who is also a publisher and an author. He is the creator and editor-in chief of Africa Today Magazine, one of Africa’s top quality and most influential magazines that are available at newsstands in over 90 countries around the globe.
Kayode is born in Ibadan, Nigeria, to Pa John Akinleye Soyinka and Mrs Jochebed Olufunmilayo (nee Akinyele) of Owu, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Kayode is the second child from six kids – five boys and one girl. He married Titilope Oluwadamilola (nee Odugbesan) on 15 October 1983. They have two children: daughter Oluwatumininu Adebimpe born on 15 January 1984, and son Oluwagbeminiyi Adekunle born 25 April, 1986.
In the incisive piece, which covered the whole page of the leading British broadsheet newspaper, and which Bernard Levin, the influential political commentator and columnist of the London Sunday Times described in his column in the newspaper’s 18 July 1993 edition, as the “most passionate account” on the Nigerian political crisis he had read, Kayode denounced the election invalidation by the military dictator President Ibrahim Babangida as “a fraud and a grand deception”.
When the 12 June 1993 presidential election of Chief M. K. O. Abiola was annulled, Kayode took it upon himself to arrange for the appearance of Chief Abiola on the influential BBC TV Newsnight live programme on the eve of the annulment to express his outrage and condemnation of the annulment to the international community. That was the first major interview by Chief Abiola on a prominent international television network. Kayode later followed this up with a devastating article that further condemned the annulment in the London newspaper, the Sunday Independent of 11 July 1993.
His appointment by the Concord Group of Newspapers as their pioneer London Correspondent in 1980 set off a fascinating friendship with his best teachers, Chief M. K. O. Abiola. Kayode was a close special assistant to the trusted lieutenant of the billionaire editor and businessman from the world for more than four years, setting up and managing his own London headquarters of the conglomerate newspaper.

Kayode began his primary schooling at Ibadan through two schools: Christ the King (CKC) in Odo-Ona (1964-1966) as well as the Ibadan City Council (ICC) Training School for the Practice of Apata (1967-69). In 1970, he was admitted to the highly regarded Baptist Boys High School (BBHS) located situated in Owu, Abeokuta for his secondary education. In BBHS it was where he was a member of the debating and literary club; He was a part of the school and earned many prizes for the school in contests for inter-school debate and literature. An excellent organist and musician, he also played organ at the school. He earned an B.A. in international relations from United States International University, San Diego, California (Bushey Campus, England) in 1987 and also an M.A. of International Journalism from City, University of London, United Kingdom in 1989. After graduation at City, University of London, Kayode was sponsored by the Commonwealth to Cambridge University, England, as a Visiting Scholar to Wolfson College in 1990. He was also appointed an 21st Century Trust Fellow in April of 1991 following a program focused on Human Rights in International Relations that took place within Worcester College, University of Oxford under the guidance of two senior fellows who were highly respected Prof. Kevin Boyle, Director of Human Rights Centre, University of Essex, UK, and Ambassador Olara Otunnu who is the president of the International Peace Academy, New York.
After Kayode was done with BBHS and BBHS, he landed an administrative job at PZ Industries Limited in Ilupeju, Lagos. At the young age of only 18 years old, Kayode took on the role of Cub Reporter for Sketch Newspapers in Ibadan, and thus began what turned into a fulfilling relationship with journalism. Kayode worked for Sketch Newspapers meritoriously in Ibadan and Benin City. The newspaper was impressed by his professionalism and impressive work as a young reporter the editorial staff of Sketch gave him with a scholarship to study in the College of Journalism, Fleet Street, London. Soyinka attended the college between 1978 and 1979 and was appointed London correspondent of the Sketch newspapers.
The story of Dele Giwa’s gruesome death by a parcel bomb on that fateful October 19, 1986 morning and Kayode’s miraculous survival from the blast and witness to that death is well known to Nigerians and press freedom campaigners around the world.
