Clemente was born in the year 1952 Naples situated in Campania located in the southern part of Italy. In 1970, he was enrolled in the architectural faculty at the Sapienza university in Rome however he did not finish his degree there. In Rome he made Kontakt with contemporary artists like Luigi Ontani and Alighiero Boetti who had moved to Rome around the same time. Also, he became acquainted along with American Cy Twombly, who was a resident of Rome. Boetti and Twombly, both ten years younger was a close mentor and friend; In 1974, they traveled to Afghanistan together. Together with Ontani, Clemente gave performances at the Galleria L’Attico. Despite his close association with the artists of the Arte povera movement and his interest in other artists like Pino Pascali as well as Michelangelo Pistoletto, Clemente preferred to create work on paper. He created ink drawings of memories and dreams of his youth, and in 1971, as part of his first solo exhibition, presented collages at his Galleria Giulia located in Rome.

He also participated Documenta at Kassel, Germany, in 1992 and 1997, and at the Whitney Biennial, also in 1997. Solo exhibitions were held in the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1990 as well as in the Sezon Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo in 1994 and at the Galleria of Modern Art in Bologna in 1999 as well as on the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2000; at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli in Naples between 2002 and 2003 and as part of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2004 and in the Palazzo Sant’Elia in Palermo, in Sicily in 2013; in both Coro della Maddalena in Alba and Santa Maria della Scala in Siena in 2016 as well as in the NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2017.
