Janet Lynn is one of the most popular and richest Figure Skater who was born on April 6, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Janet Lynn Nowicki, born April 6, 1953 in Chicago (Illinois), is an American figure skater. She was the 1972 Olympic bronze medalist. She is also a two-time medalist at the world championships and a five time U.S. national champion.

For the fourth consecutive year, Lynn defeated Holmes to win the national title. There were many predictions that Lynn would win the World and Olympic golds, especially given Schuba’s ineptness in free skating. Schuba’s poor performance in Lyon, France, the year before had drawn boos. However, she won the championship due to her huge lead in compulsory figures. Lynn was 4th in compulsory figures at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo (Hokkaido), Japan. Schuba had a large lead in this segment. Despite Schuba’s 7th place in free skating, her lead on figures allowed her to win the gold medal. Magnussen won silver, and Lynn won bronze. This order was repeated at the 1972 World Championships held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Lynn’s popularity was such that the Ice Follies offered her a three-year contract for $1,455,000, which made her the highest-paid female professional athlete of the time. Ice Follies with Lynn as its star positioned itself on a firmer basis in its rivalry with the Ice Capades. In 1974, Janet Lynn became the World Professional Champion in an event created by promoter Dick Button to showcase her.

Lynn’s professional career was cut short after only two years by problems with allergy-related asthma exacerbated by the cold, damp air in skating rinks. In 1975, she retired from skating and started a family. In the early 1980s, with her asthma under control, she returned to skate professionally for a few years. She again appeared in Button’s professional competitions and co-starred with John Curry in his made-for-TV ice ballet, “The Snow Queen”.

Lynn won her first senior title at the 1969 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She defeated Karen Magnussen from Canada for the North American Championship that year. In spite of the injuries to Magnussen and Hana Maskova from Czechoslovakia, she finished 5th at World Championships. She finished behind Julie Lynn Holmes who she had defeated for the national title. Gabriele Seyfert from East Germany won the gold medal. Seyfert and Trixi Schuba from Austria were again 1st and 2nd at the 1970 World Championships. Holmes was 3rd, and Lynn was 6th. One of the problems was inconsistency with compulsory figures. This meant she had to make up time in free skating. Lynn worked with Pierre Brunet in New York, a great coach who had previously trained World Champions Carol Heiss (and Donald Jackson) under his tutelage. She placed 5th in Figures and 4th overall in Free Skating at the 1971 World Championships. Holmes took the silver, Schuba the gold and Magnussen got the bronze.

Janet Lynn is one of the richest Figure Skater from United States. According to our analysis, Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, Janet Lynn 's net worth $5 Million. (Last Update: December 11, 2023)

At 11 years old, she was the youngest person to successfully pass the eighth and final US Figure Skating Association test. Two years later, she won the U.S. Junior Ladies Championship at Berkeley, California. She landed a triple salchow jumping, which was a feat that female skaters were not able to do at that time. She was also the first female skater to include a triple-toe loop in her programs later on.

Lynn was promoted to the senior division and won bronze at 1968 U.S. Championships. This earned her the right to compete in the 1968 Winter Olympics at Grenoble (France), where she placed 9th. She was just 14 years old at the time and this was her first major international competition. In 1968, she was also 9th in the World Championships.

By this time, Lynn’s motivation was decreasing and she also struggled with her weight, leading her to consider leaving competition. She decided to continue competing and took her fifth National title in 1973. With Schuba’s retirement and the devaluation of compulsory figures caused by the addition of the short program to competitions, only Magnussen seemed to stand in her way. At the 1973 World Championships, Lynn skated her best figures ever, taking 2nd in that discipline, but in the newly introduced short program of required jumps and spins, which she had been expected to win, two falls landed her in 12th position. She won the free skate and moved up to take the silver medal in the final event of her amateur career.
