Thomas Dowd (born 11 September 1970) is a Canadian Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. The appointment was made in the name of Pope Benedict XVI, Dowd is currently Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Montreal.
In 2004, Dowd played a role in the creation for the 5th edition of the Ars Magica role playing game. He was acknowledged in the book that outlined the rules for his design contributions and also for his role as an official play tester. On 11 July 2011, Dowd was nominated to be an Auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Montréal by Pope Benedict XVI. Dowd was nominated alongside Christian Lépine. Dowd and Lépine were consecrated on September 10, 2011 by Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, the then Archbishop of Montréal. He also serves as titular bishop of Treba, an ancient diocese in Trevi, Italy. In 2013, Dowd was appointed to the faculty of the Newman Institute of Catholic Studies. He was made an Honorary Senior Fellow of Renison University College in 2014 for his work in promoting Christian unity. He received the John F. Lemieux medal from Concordia University in 2018.
Dowd was part of a small group of bishops that attended a screening of the film Prey in September 2019, where he and the other bishops had a chance to dialogue with survivors of clergy sexual abuse. On October 1, 2019, he participated in the radio show Ottawa Morning with Robyn Bresnahan as a follow up. On November 16, 2019, the Catholic Register published an opinion piece written by Dowd about the experiences of watching the film.
As a technologist in the market prior to his ordination, Dowd created his blog back in the year 2003. Dowd became the very first Canadian priest to start a blog. Additionally, Dowd was the person responsible for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops online presence. It was one of the first Episcopal Conference to have a website. After his ordination Dowd was appointed as an assistant pastor in The Montreal churches of Holy Name of Jesus between 2001 and 2002 as well as Saint Thomas a Becket between 2002 between 2002 and 2005. From 2005 to 2006 Dowd became the Parish Administrator for St. Veronica and assistant pastor of St. Luke. From 2005 to 2006, Dowd was also the hospital chaplain at Lakeshore General Hospital in Pointe-Claire. Between September 2006 and the time of his episcopal ordination Dowd was a part of the diocesan curia , as Associate Director of the Office of Pastoral Personnel, as well as as Director of Diocesan Formation Services.
Born from Lachine, Quebec, Canada, Dowd studied at Concordia University in Montreal where he earned an undergraduate degree from the school in. Being extremely active during the school years of his university assisted Dowd get ready for a public life. He was involved in 25 committees, and served as the head of the Commerce and Administration Student Association and was also on the Concordia University Board of Governors and Senate. After having left Concordia, Dowd started working for Ericsson Research Canada, eventually becoming the manager in Ericsson Research Canada’s Global Integration and Verification Organization. He was with Ericsson Research Canada for three years before he resigned for the priesthood. Dowd attended The Grand Seminaire de Montreal, that was part of the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome and he graduated with degrees in Theology, Philosophy and Divinity in the years 1997, 2000, and 2002, respectively. Dowd also earned the Licentiate in Theology at the Universite of Montréal in 2002. Dowd was ordained as a priest on the 7th of December, 2001.
Dowd began studies in canon law in 2010, prior to being named a bishop. He continued those studies part time while a bishop, eventually obtaining a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Institut de droit canonique (Université de Strasbourg) in 2018.
