Donal Gerard Lenihan (born 12 September 1959) is a former Irish football unionist. He regularly appears as a co-commentator on radio and TV for games and also contributes to the Irish Examiner, as well as working as a finance expert in Cork. Lenihan was admitted into the Munster Rugby Hall of Fame in April of 2019. He was presented in the Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Hall of Fame in November of 2013. He was named Irish rugby’s ‘Player of The Decade during the 1980’s by Irish Times.
Lenihan was a child of an environment of sports. The father of his son, Gerald Lenihan, was a All-Ireland heavyweight champion in boxing and a Gaelic soccer player of distinction and was in the same team with Jack Lynch. Donal was a primary school student. He was a student at Saint Patrick’s on Gardiner’s Hill and then went on to Christian Brothers College, Cork. He captained the institution for a time, winning Munster Junior as well as Senior Schools titles and was also captain of Irish schools. He was an undergraduate at UCC and was part of the UCC rugby team during his time at UCC.
After his retirement from playing rugby, he was appointed as the manager for Ireland in 1998, along with the coach Warren Gatland. He left the position of manager at the close year 2000, to assume the management for the British and Irish Lions for their 2001 tour to Australia along with the coach, Sir Graham Henry.

Lenihan was the first player to play a game in a test for Ireland on November 21, 1981 against Australia aged 22. He was famous for his aerial skill in the line-out and the second row, he was always present in his Irish team for more than 10 years, which included two Triple Crowns as well as three Five Nations Championship victories. It was his break from the line-out which led to Mike Kiernan’s drop-goal that won the championship against England in the year 1985.
Lenihan took part in four matches at the 1987 inaugural Rugby World Cup where he was the Irish captain. He also played in three games in 1991’s Rugby World Cup. The Munsterman has captained his nation 17 times (3rd most of the amateur era and 7th all-time). He was chosen as a player for the three British and Irish Lions tours – 1983 and 1986 (IRB Centenary Match) 1989 and was captain of the Lions on several occasions during their successful tour in 1989. His 52nd and final Irish appearance (6th highest in the amateur period) was against Wales on January 18th, 1992.
