In 1990, he began his professional career in Italy at Eppan’s third division side. He would climb the ladder over the years and spent 12 years in the Swiss National League A (NLA), one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
Alston played in Italy until 1994. He signed with EHC Biel, the NLA, for the 1994-1995 campaign. Alston quickly became a prominent scorer in the Swiss top- flight. He scored 28 goals and 23 assists (36 matches) for Biel. Alston joined the Berlin Capitals of Germany’s top-tier division, Deutsche Eishockey Liga, (DEL) for the 1997-98 season. After one year, he transferred to Adler Mannheim and helped the team win its first German championship (1998-1999). Alston was named DEL Player-of-the Year in 1999 after leading the DEL with scoring (55 games, 31 goals, 43 assists). After winning the second German championship in Mannheim 2000-01, Alston signed with NLA team ZSC Lions. Alston was a key player in the Lions’ run to the 2008 Swiss championship as well as the 2009 Champions Hockey League win. Alston also made two appearances in NLA finals with ZSC, and was an assistant captain for many years.
He became sport director at Swiss side Lausanne HC in 2011.
