David Gilkey Biography

David Gilkey is one of the most popular and richest Photojournalist who was born on January 5, 1966 in Portland, Oregon, United States. Gilkey and Tamanna were among the 28 and 27th journalists to be killed in Afghanistan as per the Committee to Protect Journalists.

In the year of his demise at the time of his death, at the time of his death, United States had been at fighting in Afghanistan for about 15 years, but the involvement of the United States can be traced to 1979 when the then Soviet Union invaded the country and the United States armed the Afghanistan rebels. One year after their deaths, NPR clarified that a firefight with troops loyal to a Taliban leader named Mullah Ismail — not to be confused with another Mullah Ismail of the Taliban — had occurred while the reporters were on convoy and Tamanna was killed by gunfire and Gilkey by burns with smoke inhalation.

David Gilkey was taking pictures and covering stories of war-related events in Afghanistan around the time of his death. Multiple attacks were happening between the Afghan military and Taliban fighters, and so Gilkey traveled to Marjah, located in southern Afghanistan, to cover the conflict. Gilkey was traveling with the Afghan military to cover fights near Marjah. On June 5, 2016, a rocket-propelled grenade fired by the Taliban hit the Afghan Army vehicle that Gilkey shared with his native handler Zahihullah Tamanna, and an unknown Afghan army driver. The explosion caused the Humvee to burst into flames and killed Gilkey and the two others. A second vehicle was following behind Gilkey’s, but this group was not harmed in the incident.

After a stint with Boulder Daily Camera, David Gilkey was recruited at The Detroit Free Press in 1996 and was employed by the Knight Ridder media company for 11 years. In 2007 Gilkey joined National Public Radio as a photojournalist and video editor on staff. In his time at NPR, Gilkey continuously covered conflict and wars in various countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel/Palestine and Gaza. In the course of more than twenty years Gilkey captured events like the end of the apartheid rule in South Africa, the earthquake in Haiti as well as the Ebola incident in Liberia.

David Gilkey was born in Portland, Oregon, and was the father of Alyda Gilkey and Richard (Dick) Gilkey. When he was a kid, Gilkey wanted to be truck driver, but started taking up photography due to the fact that his father was a photographer. He had an dark room, and he was able to teach David how to operate cameras at a young age. He graduated in his class in 1985 at Woodrow Wilson High School in the town he grew up in. Gilkey continued to pursue his passion for photography during the middle of the 1980s when he enrolled in photography in the school of Oregon State and was a photojournalist for The Daily Barometer, the OSU student newspaper. However, the newspaper was not able to finish his studies. Gilkey was a resident of Portland, Oregon, was 50 years old when he died in a battle zone.

In 2007, Gilkey received the Free Press Award, also referred to as the National Emmy Award, for his inspiring video series. This video was referred to as “Band of Brothers,” which covered the deployment of marines in Iraq. He also received the 2010 George Polk Award for his coverage of the U.S. military and its treatment of the wounded. He was presented with the Still Photographer of the Year Award in 2011. He won the Peabody Award and Edward R. Murrow Award (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) for his coverage of the Ebola epidemic.
