Camille Lepage, born January 28, 1988 and died May 12, 2014. She was a French photographer who was killed in conflict in Central Africa Republic in 2014. The French presidency described her death as a murder and it was the first time that a Western journalist had been killed in the conflict.
Later, she specialized in photojournalism, and she worked in Africa independently, most notably in Egypt and South Sudan. She moved to South Sudan’s capital Juba after completing her Southampton degree. It was a year and half before she arrived in Bangui (the capital of the CAR), where she spent the final months of her life. In an interview, she spoke out about her interest in conflict and photojournalism a year prior to her death. She answered that she wasn’t sure she could talk about her career yet because she’s still only just starting. It is amazing to travel to remote places, meet great people and be able document their experiences. Her work was published in many news outlets including The Guardian, Le Monde and The Washington Post. She has also worked for several nongovernmental organizations, including WFP, Enough Project and UNESCO.
Lepage spoke passionately about the seriousness of the news stories surrounding the Central African Republic conflict that are not covered by the mainstream media: “I can’t accept that people’s tragedies are silenced simply because no one can make money out of them,” she said. “I decided to do it myself, and bring some light to them no matter what.”
