Richard Say, a Canadian swimmer who was born May 18, 1979, is a three time Olympic and National record-holder. Say, his brothers and sisters, swam for Salmon Arm Sockeye Swim Club as a child. He began swimming seriously at the University of Victoria when he was 18 years old.
Say won three medals at the 2004 World Short Course Championships. He was a silver medalist in the 200-metre freestyle, bronze in the 4×100-metre relay and a silver medal in the 100-metre freestyle. Both events were held in Canadian records. He won one silver medal at the Commonwealth Games (1998 and 2002), as well as two bronze medals. He was a participant in two Pan Pacific Championships (1999 and 2002), where he won 3 bronze medals all in relays. His career-high 4th place finish for the 200-meter freestyle also earned him three bronze medals. He was a double bronze medalist at the 1999 Pan American Games in the 400-metre freestyle as well as the 4×200-metre-free relay.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he was a member of the Canadian teams that finished sixth in the 4×100-metre freestyle relay and fifth in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay.
Say caused a slight controversy at the 2004 Olympics after the 4x200m freestyle relay. He said this in the post-race interview, which was broadcast live on national television. He was upset that he could not make up for his teammates’ mistakes. Andrew Hurd, Brian Johns and Brent Hayden expressed dismay at the effort that broke the Canadian record by more than 3.5 seconds. However, they were disappointed in only the 5th place finish, which was not eligible for any medals.

Since 1998, Say has been a key member of the National Swim Team. His achievements include 20 national titles and Canadian records in five events: 100 free, 200, 400 free (scm), 400 free (lcm), 200 and 400 free (lcm), as well as numerous national relay records. He competed for Canada in three Olympic Games (2000-2004 and 2008). He reached the finals of 200 freestyle in 2000, 2004 and 2004. He was a part of Canada’s relays that reached the finals at the World Championships in 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007.
