Potgieter was the first player to make his class debut in the month of April in 2015 as He started the Sharks’ XV’s game against Free State XV in Round Three of their 2015 Vodacom Cup match in Kokstad. In the second match he played with the Boland Cavaliers in Empangeni a couple of weeks later Potgieter got his very first senior try just before half-time. He then added an additional try ten seconds into the second quarter with a 52-12 win for his team. Potgieter made two more appearances with Griquas as well as against the Eastern Province Kings – during the regular season when players of the Sharks XV missed out on the quarterfinals due to finishing in sixth place on the Southern Section.
Potgieter again played first class rugby for the Sharks XV in 2016, but made just four appearances – all of those from the bench – in the 2016 Currie Cup qualification series.
He started six games and made six appearances on his bench in the Sharks U21 team at the 2015 Provincial Championship for Under-21s when the duo of him and Mzamo Majola swapped places in the starting line-up throughout the tournament. Potgieter is a native of Pretoria in South Africa, where he was a student at Hoerskool Zwartkop, but he did not represent his provincial union called named the Blue Bulls, at national tournaments for schoolboys. He relocated to Durban before his 2013 campaign to be a part of the Sharks Academy. He started all 13 games with the Sharks U19 team at the 2013 Provincial Championship for Under-19 as flanker. He scored four tries during home matches with Free State U19, Blue Bulls U19, Border U19 and Border U19, and one more upon his return to his home town in Pretoria with the Blue Bulls – as the Sharks were third on the log, before losing 25-27 to Golden Lions U19s in Johannesburg.
He made it to the Sharks Under-21 team during the 2014 Under-21 Provincial Championship. After playing two games as a flanker the prop was switched to loosehead throughout the tournament, making a additional seven appearances. He scored tries against Border U21 (away), Border U21 (home), Border U21 (away), Free State U21, and Border (home) in the event that the Sharks were fifth in the standings but failed to make it to the semi-finals.
In August 2016, Potgieter was among a number of players included in a hastily assembled Eastern Province Kings squad; the team was liquidated the day before the 2016 Currie Cup Premier Division started, but quickly reformed and contracted a number of players that didn’t feature in other teams’ plans for the season. Potgieter didn’t feature in their first match, but was named on the bench in their next match against the Blue Bulls. He made his debut in the Currie Cup Premier Division in his hometown, coming on as a replacement in the 52nd minute of the match. After another appearance off the bench against Western Province, he made his first start in their 24–47 defeat to Griquas in Kimberley. He reverted to the bench for their match against the Free State Cheetahs, but started against both the Sharks and their final match of the season against the Pumas. With their limited preparation time, it proved to be a difficult season for the Eastern Province Kings and they finished bottom of the log, losing all eight of their matches.
