Yao Bin Biography

Yao Bin is one of the most popular and richest Figure Skater who was born on August 15, 1957 in Heilongjiang, China. Yao Bin is a Chinese figure skater coach. He is considered to be one of the pioneers in China of figure skating. Yao and Luan Bo, his partner, were the first to represent China in the World Figure Skating Championships. Yao has nearly single- handedly transformed China into a world leader in pair skating.

Yao’s 2010 Winter Olympics dream was realized when his teams placed 1st-2nd and 5th respectively. Shen & Zhao also set a new world record in terms of most points (76.66) in the pairs short program and overall competition score for pairs figure skating (216.57).

2004 was Yao’s year. His pair team placed 5th, 3rd and 2nd at the 2004 World Championships. This is 24 years after Yao and his partner finished last. Yao was awarded the International Figure Skating Magazine’s Coach-of-the Year award.

Yao was part of the Harbin figure skater team between 1970 and 1984. He retired from figure skating in September 1984 and became a coach at the Harbin team. He was appointed the national coach of the sport in 1986 and shortly thereafter, in August 1987, he graduated from Harbin Normal University Sports College. Since 1998, he has been the director of the national figure skating commission.

Luan and Yao were limited to learning their moves from photographs in the closed society of China’s mid-20th-century. The 1980 World Championships in Dortmund in West Germany was a horrible experience for them. Yao said that he can still recall people laughing at their poor skating. They came 15th and finished in the last place. They finished last at the 1982 and 1981 World Championships. They were also 15th at 1984 Winter Olympics. Yao decided to build a team with world-class figure skaters after these humiliating experiences.
