Bonann (born June 28th 1952) is an American lifeguard, producer of television writer, director and showrunner. Most famously, he is known for his role in the creation of the internationally syndicated TV series, Baywatch, which ran for 11 seasons (242 episodes) and was cited on the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records as the most watched television show around the globe. His other work includes the action-drama syndicated by SAF3, SAF3, and A Chance For Children which is which is a foundation for charitable causes that aids youth who are homeless or at-risk.
In the autumn of 1970 Bonann was enrolled at Washington State University as a freshman on a partially athletic scholarship. Bonann was enlisted from the U.S. Olympic Committee and was trained to take part in the pentathlon of today. While he was not able to qualify for the competition, Bonann travelled to Munich to compete in Munich for the 1972 Summer Olympics as an uncompetitor.
Bonann became a Los Angeles County Lifeguard in 1975, when the city and county services merged. He served on the beaches of the Central Section, including Topanga, Will Rogers, Santa Monica, Venice, and Del Rey.
In the summer of 1977, while working Will Rogers State Beach, Bonann performed a routine rescue of some children who were caught in a riptide. The children’s father was Stu Erwin, Jr., who worked for MTM Enterprises, a television production company run by Grant Tinker, the future chairman and CEO of NBC. Bonann would go on to pitch his idea for a television show about lifeguards to Erwin and Tinker, who eventually helped him sell the show to NBC.
In the year 1970, Bonann began his lifeguard career as an LA City Ocean Lifeguard. Following the completion of his training for rookies the lifeguard was awarded his preferred post and worked in the Lifeguard Tower #18 at Will Rogers State Beach, just a few miles from the home of his family located in West Los Angeles.

Bonann was a student at Palisades High School from 1967 until 1970. After his allergies kept him out of outdoor activities, he enrolled in the swimming team. Contact lenses improved his vision, however swimming with them was difficult and Bonann required special eye aids to view the pools’ walls. He eventually became a specialist in the backstroke to ensure that he could utilize flags that were overhead to help him gauge the speed of the length of his stroke. He was voted the best swimmer during his second year, however, he didn’t finish a competitive event until two years after. When he was in his final year of high school, Bonann got the top spot in the polls.
In the late 70s Bonann thought of a TV series that would tell the stories of his heroes from his lifeguard buddies. Following a meeting with Stu Erwin Jr. of Grant Tinker’s MTM Enterprises in 1977, Bonann proposed the idea which was then known as A.C.E.S., for Aquatic Corps for Emergency Service. Erwin did not agree, but advised Bonann to work on the idea.
When WSU dropped the men’s swimming program, Bonann transferred to California State University in Long Beach, California. He continued to swim with the CSULB team, alongside Olympic athletes Gunnar Larsson, Klaus Barth, and Hans Fassnacht, until 1974 when he graduated with a BA degree in journalism.

In 1987, Bonann formed his own production company called Tower 18 Productions, named for his original lifeguard tower on Will Rogers State Beach. The first project under his new banner was another documentary for the USOC called City of Gold about the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
