The painting of Liesegang is considered to be varied and thematic, with distinctive smooth surfaces and striking graphic images that are often arranged as diptychs. The majority of his work from the 1980s and 1990s made reference to the past to address current issues like the intersection of sexuality, geopolitics, death and religion. Nature-based observation is at the heart of his latest work.

Since 2013, Liesegang is back in the United States and now divides his time between his painting studio in central Massachusetts and his involvement with the Amsterdam Grafisch Altelier art studio in Amsterdam.

After a brief visit in Los Angeles in 1977-1978, Liesegang returned to Boston to begin his artistic career. Without formal education beyond private painting classes at the age of 12. The first exhibition of his work began in the year 1980 and continued throughout the early 1990s. When he was in 1992, Liesegang relocating into New York City, switched from oil painting to acrylic and began to explore the diptych format for narrative. After the attacks of the 9/11 attacks, Liesegang relocated to Amsterdam and started his journey into printing. Tombstone rubbings, which are often taken from the floor of Europe’s most ancient cathedrals, and then incorporated to the process of screen printing and inspired the artist to include the visual form that illuminated manuscripts provide into his print works.
