Alan Webb, born January 13, 1983 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is an American former track-and- field athlete and triathlete. Webb holds the American mile record with a time in 3:46.91 seconds. Webb was the American representative in the 1500-meter men’s race at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Webb competed professionally for Nike from the beginning of 2013 to the end. After the 2014 Millrose Games, he retired to train for the triathlon. He is currently the assistant coach for the University of Arkansas Little Rock Cross Country, track and field and team teams.

Webb was 5th at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene (Oregon) in the 1500m. Webb finished in 3:41.62.

Alan Webb married Julia Rudd in October 2010, who also enjoys running and is an assistant coach for a high school cross country team. A convert to Catholicism and LIFE Runners member, Alan and Julia have three daughters, Joanie, Paula and Gabriella (Gabby).

In 2010, he underwent surgery for an Achilles tendon injury and returned at the Fifth Avenue Mile in September, finishing in fourth behind defending champion Andrew Baddeley.

Webb won the national 1500 m running title in 2007 again, beating Bernard Lagat by 50 meters. Webb finished 8th in final 1500 m race at the World Championships, Osaka, Japan. Webb won the IAAF Golden League 1500 m race in Paris on July 6, 2007, with a lifetime record of 3:30.54. This was third fastest time on the American list. Webb broke the American mile record at a meet held in Brasschaat (Belgium) on July 21st 2007. Webb’s time of 3:46.91 beat the record set 25 years ago by Steve Scott, who ran 3:47.69. He won the New York Fifth Avenue Mile.

Webb was a graduate of South Lakes High School, Reston, Virginia. He ran 4:06.94 in 1999 to break Jim Ryun’s sophomore mile record of 4;07.8. Webb finished second in the 2000 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships’ fall season, behind Dathan Ritzenhein. Webb ran a mile in 3:59.86 at New York City Armory’s New Balance Games in January 2001. This made him the first American high-schooler to run under four minutes indoors. Webb broke Thom Hunt’s indoor high school record of 4:02.7. Webb also beat Hunt’s indoor AR for 1500m (3:46.6). Webb ran the 1500m mark in 3:43.27. Andrew Hunter, Loudoun Valley High School from Virginia, broke Webb’s record fifteen years later with a time in 3:58.25 on the same track. Webb ran a mile in just 3:53.43 at the Prefontaine Classic four months later. This beat Ryun’s national high school record of 36 years old of 3:55.3. Webb was the first high school student to run a mile under four minutes. Webb ran the 1500-meter mark in 3:38.26, breaking Ryun’s high school record of 3:39.0 from 1964. To follow up his performance at Prefontaine, he won the 800 m Virginia State High School title in 1:47.74. This made him the fourth fastest high schooler at this distance. In 2001, he was named Track and Field News’ High School Athlete-of-the Year.

Webb competed for Nike since 2002 when he became a professional. He became an Olympian in 2004 when he won the 1500 m at the U.S. Olympic Trials. In the second round of Olympic competition, he was eliminated in Athens. He won another national title at 1500m in 2005 and reached the Finals of World Championships Helsinki in that event. He set personal records at all distances, including the 1500 and 5000 m. The American record was also set at 2 miles.

After many disappointing results since breaking the American mile record, Webb decided in August 2009 to move to Portland, Oregon, to train with coach Alberto Salazar. At the time, Salazar already coached Kara Goucher, Galen Rupp, Amy Yoder Begley, and Dathan Ritzenhein, and Webb was his first 1500 m runner. In March 2011, Webb decided to leave Salazar on amicable terms.
