Angelos Basinas is one of the most popular and richest Greek footballer who was born on January 3, 1976 in Chalkida, Greece. Angelos Basinas (Greek: Aggelos Mpasinas, pronounced as [‘anjelos basi’na born on the 3rd of January 1976 , in Chalkida, Greece) is an ex-retired Greek professional football player. He was the defensive middle-fielder. He also plays as an a midfielder central as well as the position of a center back. Most famously, he is remembered for his role as a key player as a central midfielder in his role in the Greek national team which took home the 2004 European Championship. He scored the goal through that Angelos Charisteas scored the winning goal in the Euro 2004 Final against Portugal.
Though rumored to move towards Birmingham City, Everton, AEK Athens, and Olympiacos in the 2006 winter Transfer window Basinas was signed to a deal with Mallorca and decided to move on from Greece and be a part of to the Spanish Primera Division. At the end of 2005/06 campaign, Basinas completed a successful first time in Mallorca and helped stop the team from falling into relegation which was crucial to the team’s resilience. In his second season at the club, he guided the team achieve seventh place, just one point removed from European qualifying. On 2 February 2009, Portsmouth confirmed the signing of Basinas on an eighteen-month contract. He made his debut for Portsmouth on 7 February 2009 against Liverpool. Just a few hours after his debut, manager Tony Adams, who brought Basinas in, was sacked by the club and replaced by Paul Hart. Under the new manager, Basinas hardly played and was benched for the rest of the season after only making 3 appearances for Portsmouth. Despite little playing time in his first season at Portsmouth, Basinas stated that he wanted to stay at the club. When Avram Grant became the manager of the club, Basinas had continued to impress for Portsmouth when called upon and a poll among Portsmouth fans on 23 January 2010, showed that he’s appreciated by the fans. 77% of fans believe that “Basinas has the creative touch and must play”, while only 2% believed he should leave the club. With Portsmouth Angelos Basinas reached the 2010 FA Cup Final against Chelsea of Carlo Ancelotti.
In the summer 2010, Angelos Basinas moved to Arles, with his teammate Angelos Charisteas, in the Ligue 1. He made his debut on 21 August 2010 in a 1–2 away defeat against Toulouse. Basinas made a total of five appearances in League 1 and French Cup. The contract was broken two months later.
On July 31, 2008, he signed a contract for three years of EUR1.4 million per year with AEK Athens. He picked 14, which was his initial choice. Basinas earned his first cap with a 3-1 victory against El Salvador on 18 August 1999. He scored his debut goal in his only game, which was as well, with El Salvador just two days after.
