Simon started his journalism career in the year 1980 as a cadet reporter for The Knox Sherbrooke News for Leader Newspapers The Leader. In 1982, he was a reporter at the Mark Day’s The Truth in Melbourne where He was part of the team of investigators. In 1984, he became Victoria’s youngest A-grade journalist when he assumed the The 4×4 Magazine for Syme magazines, aged 22. He was employed by 3AW as the Assistant Chief of Staff before becoming the Magazine Development Manager of Syme Magazines in 1986. He had the talkback talk show for radio 3UZ for 3 years , between 1986 between 1986 and 1989. In 1988, he launched his first business for brand communication, Dare Concepts. After quitting journalism full-time, Simon was a contributing writer of The Herald Sun and is an ongoing commentator in channel 7. 7’s Today Tonight program.

Simon Hammond has been active in community and charitable pursuits. He took on pro bono work for Anglicare and Open Family. Hammond also spent time as a board member of Open Family from 1993 – 1995.

But wanting to venture increasingly into advertising, Simon founded The Edge gain with wife Robyn Nelson, and new business partner Ron Barnacle. The Edge made a massive splash when it debuted it’s still revered ‘roo cull’ trilogy of ads for youth outreach service ‘Open Family’. ‘Roo Cull’ showed Australian street kids gunned down, ‘Cry Wolf’ threw street kids to wolves and ‘Waltzing Matilda’ included a young Australian putting on blackface and receiving more aid as a result.

In 1975, he was honored with the Queen Scout award. Hammond was presented with the first literary prize by Salesian school in 1979.
