The path to success of Anju from a rank of at 61 in 2001, to a rank of 6 in 2003 in only two years was a result of hard work and intense planning. The part of the credit for her success is due to her coach and husband Robert Bobby George, who she believes was the main influencer who assisted her in reaching her potential and reaching the target. Bobby George, who has a degree in mechanical engineering, and an ex-national champion in triple jumping was able to quit his job to become a full-time coach for Anju in the year 1998. He comes from a well-known sporting family, and is also the brother of the well- known volleyball player. Anju and Bobby realized that exposure abroad is crucial to compete in top-level events took the necessary steps and training alongside Mike Powell, a world record holder, prior to taking part in the World Athletics meet, which allowed her to gain valuable experience in the field of technique.
She contested at the 2004 Athens Olympics but remained on 5th position with her personal best score of 6.83. She also contested at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but failed to qualify for the women’s long jump event, fouling in all her three attempts.
In September 2005, Anju won the gold medal in the women’s long jump at the 16th Asian Athletics Championship in Incheon City of South Korea with a leap of 6.65 metres. She went on to win the gold medal at the IAAF World Athletics Final in 2005 with a leap of 6.75 m, a performance she considers her best. She won silver medal in women’s long jump in 15th Asian Games, 2006 held at Doha. In 2007, Anju won silver medal in 17th Asian Athletics Championship at Amman (Jordan) with a jump of 6.65m and this qualified her for Osaka World Championship in August 2007 where she finished 9th. Anju start her 2008 season with silver medal in 3rd Asian Indoor Championship in athletics at Doha (Qatar) with a jump of 6.38m and she improved her distance to 6.50m by winning gold in the 3rd South Asian Athletics Championship at Kochi ( Kerala, India).
Although she initially started with Heptathlon but she soon began to focus on her jump events. She went on to win the long jump gold medal at the year 1996 at Delhi Junior Asian championship. In 1999, Anju broke the national record for triple jump at the Bangalore Federation Cup and silver medal at the South Asian Federation Games in Nepal. In 2001, Anju improved her record in long jumping to 6.74 meters at the National Circuit Meet at Thiruvananthapuram. In the same year , she also took gold in three jumps and long leap at the Ludhiana National Games. Anju took the lead in her competitions at The Hyderabad National games also. She was awarded the bronze medal by clearing 6.49 meters during The 2002 Commonwealth Games at Manchester. She also took home her gold medal in the Asian Games in Busan.

Anju Bobby George (born 19 April 1977) is retired Indian athlete. She was India’s first and sole World Champion in Athletics IAAF World Athletics Final. Anju Bobby George set a record by winning the bronze medal for long leap at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris. By winning this medal Anju became the very first Indian athlete to ever earn the medal at an event at the World Championships in Athletics jumping 6.70 meters. Then she went to take home an award of gold at the IAAF World Athletics Final (a contest between the top eight athletes from around the world, based on world rankings) at the end of 2005. an event she regards as her greatest. Anju was elevated to gold medal from silver at the year 2005’s World Athletics Final in Monte Carlo after the exclusion of Tatyana Kotova from Russia from the International Association of Athletics Federations after the testing of her samples taken during the 2005 World Championship in Helsinki. Anju was given the Arjuna Award in 2002. She finished 5th with a personal highest scoring at 6.83 in the 2004, Athens Olympics.
Anju was born into the the Kochuparambil family of Cheeranchira village in Changanassery Taluk in Kottayam, Kerala, in an Syrian Orthodox family, to K. T. Markose. She was introduced to athletics by her father. Her fascination was further developed by her coach at Koruthode school. She completed her education at CKM Koruthode School and graduated from Vimala College. At the school’s athletics meet between 1991 and 1992, she won the 100 m hurdles as well as the 4 x 100 m relay and placed second in high jump and long jump, being the women’s champion. Anju’s athleticism was recognized in the national school championships in which she placed third in 100 m hurdles , and 4 100 relay.
Anju made history when she won the bronze medal clearing 6.70 m in Long Jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris, becoming the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Championships in Athletics.
