After a stint playing with Asiago, Bentivoglio joined the United Kingdom’s Cardiff Devils for the 2016/17 season.
After three years with the Islanders team, Sean left as a free agent. On the 22nd of July in 2010 Sean signed a one-year deal to the German team Augsburger Panther of the DEL.

Bentivoglio was born in Thorold, Ontario. He was not drafted and played four seasons of collegiate hockey at Niagara University of the CHA. In his senior season and Captain of the Purple Eagles in the 2006-07 season, Sean was named the player of the year by the CHA. Following his final year at CHA, Sean made his professional debut with the AHL’s Providence Bruins. Bentivoglio had a big impact in the P-Bruins aiding them to get through the first round of the playoffs. He scored 9 points in 13 games.
On May 21 2007, Bentivoglio signed a three-year entry-level agreement to the New York Islanders. Sean was assigned to the AHL affiliate of that of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for the 2007-08 season. In the 2008-09 season Sean reached his 32-point mark from his rookie season in his Sound Tigers and made his NHL debut with the Islanders after a 5-1 loss against Montreal Canadiens on April 2, 2009. Bentivoglio remained with Cardiff until March 2020 when he announced his retirement.
