Nishiyama has teamed up with Utana Yoshida at the beginning of 2019 following a tryout organized through the Japan Skating Federation in fall 2018 and then she made the move to train with him as well as his coach in the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club in Canada in February of 2019. He is still training solos while also dancing ice.
At the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics, Yoshida / Nishiyama placed sixth in the ice dance event with a new personal best, following a sixth-place rhythm dance and a fourth-place free dance. They were chosen by draw to be part of Team Courage for the mixed-NOC team event, alongside singles’ skaters Arlet Levandi of Estonia and Ksenia Sinitsyna of Russia and pairs team Alina Butaeva / Luka Berulava of Georgia. Yoshida/Nishiyama won the free dance portion of the team event, ahead of both the silver and bronze medalists from the individual ice dance event, to help Team Courage win the gold medal.
In their first year as a team Yoshida/Nishiyama finished sixth in both the 2019 JGP United States and 2019 JGP Italy. They also were awarded medals during the Western Sectional and advanced to the 2019-20 Japan Junior Championships, where they also won gold ahead of Ayumi Takanami and Yoshimitsu Ikeda. In the end, Yoshida and Nishiyama were named to their 2020 World Junior Championships and the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics.

Shingo Nishiyama (Xi Shan Zhen Hu , Nishiyama Shingo born on 24 January 2002) is a Japanese ice dancer. Together with the partner Utana Yoshida, he was his 2019-2020 Japanese nation’s junior national ice dancing champion as well as a 2021 Winter Youth Olympics champion in the team event.
Nishiyama was first introduced to skating, at the age of 6 on the advice by his coach Masahiro Kawagoe. He attended a lesson at the Citizens Plaza, located in Shinjuku, Tokyo. He had previously worked with Yutaka Higuchi, who was from Tokyo and was selected to play at the Japan Championships each year. Nishiyama made the move to Canada on his own at the age of 14 to join Brian Orser, Tracy Wilson along with Ghislain Briand of the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club even though he did not speak the languages. When he was struck with hip injuries in the autumn of 2018 and was incapable of performing jumps one of the coaches from the organization, Andrew Hallam, suggested that he try changing to ice dancing. Although Nishiyama initially resisted the idea of change his sport, he did draw his inspiration to Japanese athlete Dai Tamesue’s books to change his mental attitude.
Yoshida/Nishiyama set a goal of being in the top ten at the 2020 World Junior Championships. They placed twelfth in Tallinn.
