Shannon Michael Frizell (born 11 February 1994) is a native of Tongan origins. New Zealand rugby union player who is a member of the Highlanders in the Super Rugby competition. The position he prefers is flanker.

Frizell was able to start at three different times in his team All Blacks during the 2018 Rugby Championship, in the absence of injured regular player, Liam Squire. Frizell was among the most impressive players in the opening test against Argentina on September 8 and played the entire 90 minutes at his homeground in Nelson and scoring his first score in the match for The All Blacks as they won 46-24. Frizell however was not able to impress in the two final tests of the competition including the win over 32-30 South Africa, 6 October. In the final test, All Blacks were drawing 6-6 at halftime, but Frizell being substituted at 46 minutes into the game.

On 20 April 2018, Frizell scored three tries against the Blues in a Super Rugby match at Eden Park. His performances for the Highlanders earned him a call-up for New Zealand’s national rugby team, the All Blacks, having been tipped by the media for an unlikely All Black debut.

Luke Jacobson’s concussion problems continued, which ruled him out of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, to Frizell’s benefit. Frizell immediately flew to Japan after Jacobson’s injury, to re-join the 31-man All Blacks squad and has played 1 match off the bench versus South Africa and started against Canada and Namibia scoring in the Canada test

With Vaea Fifita’s recall, Frizell was dropped for the All Blacks’ end-of- season tour for the 2018 season. Newcomers Gareth Evans, Dillon Hunt and Dalton Papalii were also chosen ahead of Frizell.

Frizell was born in and was raised within Folaha, Tonga and started in his youth playing football for Folaha F.C.. and was a player in 2010 and 2011 as a member of the Tonga national team of under-17 football. He represented Tonga’s Tonga National football squad U-17 during 2011, the OFC U-17 Championship in New Zealand.

He made the switch to Football to Rugby. He began at age 17 with Apifo’ou College and represented Tonga U20 in the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in

Frizell had to be taken to the blood bin in the 22nd minute, due to an eye injury, so was temporarily replaced by Highlanders team-mate Jackson Hemopo, who was also on debut for New Zealand. Frizell came back on in the 31st minute and stayed on for the rest of the test, which the All Blacks won 49-14.
