He was an attacking midfielder for Nottingham Forest, Everton, Preston North End, Leicester City, Oxford United, New Zealand Knights and Scotland. He is the child of Scottish former international footballer Archie Gemmill.
He played in 26 matches with Scotland and scored a goal against the Hong Kong League XI in an Reunification Cup match in 2002. Gemmill was the final player in Scotland in April of 2003, in a 2-0 friendly home loss against Austria as a half-time substitute.
At the start of 2004–05 he ended a spell of more than five years at Goodison Park when he signed for Leicester City on a free transfer. He played 17 games in two years at the Walkers Stadium before a one-game spell at Oxford United, before he finished his career with a one-year spell at the New Zealand Knights; where he was a marquee player.
His first steps in to coaching were as a player/coach under Jim Smith at Oxford United in 2006. He then became player/coach at the New Zealand Knights in the Australian A-League.
Gemmill was a regular player from 1991 to 1992 in which the striker scored 8 goals across 39 league matches and also played a part in helping Forest achieve the ZDS Cup (scoring twice in the final and scoring the winner) and also finishing runners-up in the Football League Cup. He continued to be an active first team player until his transfer to Everton for PS250,000 on the 25th of March 1999. In the 12 years he spent playing at the City Ground he was involved in two promotion-winning team (1994 as well as 1998) as well as three relegated teams (1993 1997, 1999 and 1993) and was part of an overall third place finish in 1995, and also a race to the quarterfinals in the UEFA Cup in 1996, and was under five different coaches.

Gemmill began his career at Nottingham Forest as an apprentice after he left high school at the end of the year 1987. two years later, he was offered an official deal by the coach Brian Clough, who then made his first team debut on the 30th March of 1991 when they lost 3-1 at the hands of Wimbledon in Plough Lane.
Gemmill was one of the Scotland teams during the 1996 European Championships and 1998 World Cup but was unable to appear in the latter, which that he described in the latter as “bittersweet” and “heartbreaking”.
By the end of the 2002–03 season, he had played 97 Premier League games for Everton but his first team chances had become increasingly limited since David Moyes replaced Walter Smith as manager in March 2002. He did not make a single league appearances for the Toffees in the 2003–04 season, during which he spent seven games on loan at Preston North End and scored once against Bradford.
