They eventually settled in Mount Florida near Hampden Park, Cathkin Park. McLeod signed provisionally to Third Lanark while he was still in school. McLeod made quick sprints up the left side. He was known for his distinctive running style, earning him the nickname “Noddy”.
MacLeod was reluctant at first to move to St Mirren, 1956. However, he secured a guarantee that Third Lanark would survive by paying the PS8,000 fee. After six weeks at St Mirren, he moved to England with Blackburn Rovers.
He played with Hibs until 1963, when he returned to Third Lanark. In 1964 he signed for Ayr United, where he finished his playing career, with no major honours won.

He took them to a Scottish and a League Cup semi-final and also set their attendance record with 25,225 watching a 2–1 success over Rangers F.C. In 1973, MacLeod was named Ayr’s “Citizen of the Year”.
MacLeod was a member of the Thirds team that beat Alloa Athletic 10-0 in the League Cup opener in 1953. MacLeod was 8-0 ahead. His teammates had one goal: to get him on scoresheet. MacLeod had already set up five goals, but had missed many sitters. Thirds’ total grew to 10 with a left-foot rocket shot and a simple tap in. Although he joined the Royal Scots for National Service, he was still able turn out for Thirds.

Alistair Reid MacLeod, also known as Ally MacLeod, was a professional Scottish football player and manager. He lived from 26 February 1931 to 1 February 2004. Perhaps his most notable accomplishment is as Scotland’s national football team manager. This includes their appearance at 1978 FIFA World Cup. MacLeod was a left winger in Third Lanark, St Mirren and Blackburn Rovers. He also played for Hibernian, Ayr United, Third Lanark, St Mirren, Blackburn Rovers and Hibernian. Then he managed Ayr Uni (three spells), Aberdeen Scotland, Motherwell and Airdrieonians, as well as Queen of the South.
MacLeod began his playing career in Third Lanark as a provisional sign as a schoolboy in 1947. MacLeod made his debut on the Cathkin Park pitch against Stirling Albion on 6/11/1949.
Managed by fellow Scot Dally Duncan, MacLeod was man of the match in the 1960 FA Cup Final, but the game was lost 3–0 to Wolves. While at Blackburn he made strenuous efforts along with the PFA steward Jimmy Hill to help abolish the maximum wage, but when subsequently his promised wage increase was not forthcoming, while other players in the team were raised from £20 to £25 per week, he entered into discussions with Hibernian. When Blackburn realised that they were going to lose him to Hibs they matched their offer with an increase from £20 to £25. MacLeod, having already accepted Hibs’ offer, felt he could not go back on his word, so left Blackburn to go back to Scotland.
