In his retirement he takes over consultancy work and lecturing related to EU-policies and EU-institutions, in particular EU-regional policy.

He attended his home at Vienna University and at the Sorbonne University in Paris and graduated from Economics with an M.A. in 1974 and a degree in Political Sciences with a doctorate in 1975. 1975-76, he was a student at in 1974 at the College of Europe, Bruges, Belgium, studying “Economics of European Integration”. 1976 till 1980 Streitenberger worked as economic researcher at the then-largest Austrian bank, the Creditanstalt-Bankverein. 1981-1984, he was the economic editor at the state-owned Austrian broadcasting ORF. 1985-89, he was in charge of media policies and corporate planning within the Directorate General of the Austrian television and broadcasting ORF. 1990 saw him move to EXPO VIENNA AG Vienna world company for expositions, who planned the world exposition twin cities Vienna-Budapest, which was planned for 1995. In the company he was director of public affairs as well as spokesperson. In the days before the world exposition was halted by a vote of the people within Vienna Wolfgang Streitenberger moved to the Lower Austrian capital city planning corporation in St. Polten. This corporation was in charge of the transformation of St. Polten into a capital city for the federal state of Lower Austria and also constructed its new governmental and cultural structures. He was a member of the board of directors and was accountable for innovation, communications and marketing until the end of 1994. 1996 Streitenberger was named as an official for the European Commission and entrusted with the responsibility of head of the European Commission Representation to Austria.

As editor of the news bureau for the economy at the Austrian public television ORF between 1981 and 1984, He contributed numerous articles to the prime-time news show “Zeit im Bild” and to the journal of economics “Schilling”, focusing on the international financial system, banking, and development economics. From 1987 until 1994, Wolfgang Streitenberger also acted as moderator on TV and frequently led television discussion shows (the one-hour debates referred to as “Nachtstudio”) in the Austrian public television ORF. He specialized in sociology, economics, politics and the history of the world. In addition, Streitenberger wrote numerous articles for various print media, including the journals for economics “A3-Volt” and “Economy”. From 1991 to 1994, he served as editor-in-chief of the monthly journal “Stadt im Land”. Then, as head of the EU Representation to Austria, from 1991 to 1994 he served as the editor- in-chief of the monthly journal “EU Direkt” and the quarterly journal “Die Union”.

Wolfgang Streitenberger is member of a Rotary Club since 1995 and was president of his Club in 2007/2008.
