Robbie Abel, a New Zealand rugby union professional player, was born 4 July 1989. He plays hooker for Auckland in both the Mitre 10 Cup as well as for the Maori All Blacks. He played previously in Australia for the Brumbies and Canberra Vikings, as well as for Perth Spirit. He also played for Northland during the ITM Cup.

Abel returned to Western Australia in 2014 to join the Western Force playing team ahead of the 2014 Super Rugby season. Abel did not make any senior appearances in 2014. However, he played for Perth Spirit in the inaugural National Rugby Championship that year. He scored 5 tries in 9 appearances and was again named in the Force squad in 2015.

In 2018 Abel took a contract to play with Auckland in the Mitre 10 Cup competition. After a successful season with Auckland which saw the team win the 2018 Premiership, losing just one game in the regular season, Abel was named in the Māori All Blacks team to tour USA and South America.

After completing his duties, he joined Northland Rugby Union as well as the Brumbies. He played 2 years between Canberra and Whangarei with the Brumbies runners and Northland Taniwha for New Zealand’s ITM Cup.

After moving from Griffith NSW to St Edmund’s College Canberra in 2006, Robbie Abel was chosen for the Australia ‘A’ Schools Team in 2007. From 2007 to 2010, he was part of the Brumbies academy. He also spent a time in New Zealand playing Northland rugby.

Abel took a 2-year break from rugby between 2010 and 2012 in order to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Western Australia.

Abel then signed a contract with the Brumbies, joining the Canberra Vikings late in the 2015 season. In 2016 Abel made his Super Rugby debut for the Brumbies against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein. Abel featured in all games for the 2017 season and all games he was available for in 2018.
