Whitney Lynn Hedgepeth (born March 19th 1971) is an American former swimming competition athlete who was awarded a gold medal as well as two bronze medals in the 1996 Summer Olympics.
She was admitted into the University of Texas’ Longhorns Hall of Honor in 2007.
Hedgepeth’s daughter, Dakota Luther, swam at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships, and placed 15th in the 200 m butterfly.
Hedgepeth quit competition swimming following her participation in the Atlanta Games, and became an instructor for swimming at Longhorn Aquatics in Austin. Since 2005, she’s been Master’s coach for the Longhorn Aquatics program. 2013 was the year she was recognized with one of Speedo U.S. Masters Swimming Coach of the Year.

She participated at the individual 200-meter individual medley in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, placing 8th in the championship. In 1996, at the Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia, Hedgepeth took home individual silver medals in the 200-meter and 100-meter backstroke events. She also won the gold medal as part of the winning U.S. relay team in the women’s 4×100-meter Medley relay.
Hedgepeth was a student at in the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where she was a member of Coach Randy Reese’s Florida Gators swimming and diving team during 1989 and 1990. As an Gator athlete, she took home two NCAA national championships, the individual 200-meter freestyle as well as being a part of the Gators winning team for the 4×100-meter Medley relay. She was awarded seven All-American awards for her performances in the 1990 NCAA championships. After her freshman year, she was enrolled at Texas’s University of Texas in Austin, Texas, and finished her NCAA career as a swimmer for Coach Jill Sterkel’s Texas Longhorns swimming and diving team from 1992 until 1994. As an Texas Longhorn swimmer, she was awarded three additional NCAA national championships. She also received another twenty All American awards to give her a total of 27.
In 2010, Hedgepeth was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
