Thorne was appointed captain of the 2006 Junior All Blacks Season [1] on 28 May 2006. However, he pulled out the following day to undergo “a recovery-and- reconditioning program.” [2] Thorne was selected unexpectedly for the All Blacks in 2006 Tri Nations Series. It was announced on 26 June 2006. He played his first test against the All Blacks against the Springboks on 22 July 2006. As part of the All Blacks rehabilitation programme, he was restrained for the first half the 2007 Super 14 season. He played for the Crusaders again that year and was selected in the All Blacks squad to participate in the 2007 Tri Nations Series as well as the 2007 Rugby World Cup. He did not play in the 2007 World Cup, but he was in the All Blacks quarterfinal defeat to France. Thorne, who was a Super 14 player in 2008, announced on 29 November 2007 that he would be leaving New Zealand to join Yamaha Jubilo Japan. He is currently playing for the Honda Heat.
Thorne was again seen for the All Blacks during the 2004 end-of-year tour. He was an unutilized reserve against Wales at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium and started at Twickenham as a lock against Barbarians. He was named in to replace Jono Gibbes who was injured and was not able to continue the tour. His All Black record is 48 games played (22 as captain), for 42 wins, 8 losses and 5 tries.

Thorne was originally a flanker and first played in the Super 12 in 1998 with the Canterbury Crusaders. In 2002, he was elected captain and led the Crusaders’ Super 12 win in an unprecedented season of 13 wins from 13. Under his leadership, the Crusaders finished second in Super 12 in 2003 and 2004.
Thorne was an All Black rarity, particularly among captains, as he never made an international appearance at any level of the game. In 1999, he was awarded his first All Black cap. He played one test against the Springboks in the final match before the 1999 Rugby Union World Cup. He took over the captaincy from injured Anton Oliver. The All Blacks were in good form throughout 2002 and 2003. However, he was unable to travel to France and the UK due to a chronic ankle issue. Former captain Taine Randell was briefly recall to the captain’s position. The team had a great record under Thorne’s direction (playing 22 matches for 19 wins and three losses and winning the Bledisloe Cup both years), but his captaincy ended in the semi-finals at the Rugby Union World Cup 2003. After the World Cup, Thorne’s position as All Blacks captain was taken over by Tana Umaga.
Thorne was called into the Crusaders squad following numerous injuries for matches in South Africa in the 2011 Super 15. Thorne made his return on the bench against the Cheetahs.
