Choate was traded by the Gold to San Antonio Gunslingers expansion on February 13, 1984, for quarterback Bob Gagliano. Choate was the leader of the “Bounty Hunter”, a defensive unit that played in San Antonio. He recorded 197 tackles, 6sacks, and 2 interceptions, including a touchdown return. Choate led the Gunslingers in 1985 with 142 tackles and 1 sack, as well as 1 interception. Choate was one of three players to start all 54 regular-season games in the USFL’s history.
Choate, who had been out of football for two years, was signed by the USFL’s Denver Gold as a free agent on December 7, 1982. Choate played in all 18 Gold games and had a record-breaking 178 tackles. Choate also ran 5 times for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns, both on fake punts.

In May 1979, Choate was signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted-free agent. After breaking his leg during training camp, Choate spent the 1979 season on injured reserve. After the season, he was released by Falcons and was then cut by Houston Oilers on Aug 1, 1980.
After being a member of the San Antonio Gunslingers of the United States Football League, Choate played with the Green Bay Packers during the 1987 NFL season. He played at the collegiate level at Southern Methodist University.
