In her time at Capistrano Valley High School, Stachowski was three-time First- Team All American (1999-2001) in 2001 and 1999 California Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year. In club competition, she was on in the year 2002 Golden West team that won the Winter Junior Nationals, and was awarded MVP of the event.
The fourth FINA Junior World Water Polo Championships during 2001 UCLA freshmen Amber Stachowski was the team captain who led the US to gold. In 2003 Stachowski suffered a head injury during a car accident on the Los Angeles freeway, which kept her from swimming for a couple of weeks. She was able to recover and made the Olympic team six months after.
