She was raised in a small city in remote Minnesota and Melrose, Minnesota, where she began gymnastics when she was just four. “There was this movie called Nadia after Nadia Comaneci, and I must have watched that thing 1,000 times,” Smock later said. “I definitely was going to be an Olympic gymnast.” Even though his father worked as a coach in gymnastics however, she soon realized she was more suited to track and field and gave up gymnastics when she was when she was a teenager. As a high schooler, Smock did exceptionally well at triple jump, pole vault and sprinting events. Smock completed her studies at Melrose High School in 2000. She went to North Dakota State University for college on an athletic scholarship finishing in 2004. While at the university she was a three-time NCAA Division II triple jump champion.
In the year 2011, Smock took first place on the podium in triple jumping at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a leap of 14.07 meters (46.2 feet). But, her jump fell only a fraction short of the B standard required to compete at the World Championships. Just a few days before the announcement of the American squad was named, the American recorded at a new personal best of 14.18 meters (46.5 feet) which allowed her to compete in Worlds. She was not able to make the finals in the World Championships, finishing 31st out of 34 athletes. The 2011 Indoor Championships, she was 2nd in triple jumping, achieving the distance of 13.63 meters (44.7 feet).
In 2014, Smock won the 2014 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships Triple Jump in 13.81 m (45 ft 31⁄2 in) but failed to qualify to the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships – Women’s triple jump. However, in 2015, she again took the indoor national title in the women’s triple jump for the fourth consecutive season, beating her own personal best with a jump of 43.58 feet (13.28 m). Amanda Smock (nee Thieschafer, born on July 27 1982) is an American triple jumper who participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics. In her college days she was a triple-time NCAA Division II track and field champion. She was the winner of the triple jump in the United States Outdoor Championships in 2012 and 2011, and in the Indoor Championships in 2011.
Smock was selected to compete in the 2008 Olympic Track and Field Trials She was fifth, but was not able to be a part of her place on the Olympic team. Following the event her father got his credential and changed the “2008” with “2012.” He passed away shortly following the Trials however, Smock put the credential in a place on her desk where she would look at it on a daily basis as a symbol of motivation.
In 2012, she won the indoor championship with a distance of 13.77 metres (45.2 ft), qualifying her for the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships. At Worlds, she finished 26th of 30 competitors. At the Olympic Trials, which also served as the National Championships, she won the event with a jump of 13.94 metres (45.7 ft) and qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. At the games, she failed to advance out of the qualifying round of competition. Her best of three attempts was 13.61 metres (44.7 ft), well short of the 14.4 metres (47 ft) necessary to advance. Of her performance, she remarked “To be here at the Olympic Games is awesome, and I think with each passing year this is going to mean more and more, and the performance will kind of fade away.” She was the lone female triple jump representative for the United States at the games. Smock said she would continue to compete for another year at least, but said it was unlikely she would try for another Olympics.
