Moses Kiptanui, a Kenyan long and middle distance athlete was born October 1, 1970 in Marakwet District. He is most well-known for his 3,000m steeplechase. From 1991 to 1995, he was number one in the rankings and was three times IAAF World Champion. Kiptanui was also first to run 3000m steeplechase under eight minutes.

He came in second place in the Atlanta final a year later. Joseph Keter, a fellow Kenyan, defeated him. At the 1997 World Championships in Athletics in Athens (Greece), Kiptanui did not win his fourth consecutive medal but took silver. Wilson Boit Kipketer (also from Kenya) was the winner.

A school was built by Shoe4Africa to honor the lifetime achievements of Kiptanui. The Shoe4Africa Moses Kiptanui School was opened in 2012 at Kamoi district, Marakwet and has eight primary classes with 320 students. Two ancillary early childhood development classes were added in 2015.

He broke the 5000m record in Rome in 1995 in 12:55.30 minutes (June 8). He won his third World Championship gold medal in Gothenburg and also set the new 3000m steeplechase world record in Zurich at 7:59.18 minutes (August 16). This was the fastest time a man has ever swum under eight minutes in the 3000m steeplechase.
